My car has started to become noisy on start, and when you turn the steering, it moans and groans. i replaced the auxillary drive belt and tensioner, which made the noise less obvious, but it's still there.
A few months ago, this noise started, and when I checked the PAS fluid level, it was low, so I topped it up and after the initial start, all became quiet.
I may just remove the aux belt and rotate the PAS pump pulley to see if there is resistance (starting to seize??).
Is this a common feature of the Sharan TDI (51 plate) and what is the cure.
Many thanks

Alternator one way clutch failure.
What makes you believe it is this at fault? Is this a known problem. Is there a definate way of fault finding this.
Many thanks

Yes it is common on the TDI. Remove the belt and spin the alternator clockwise and it should drive, when you stop you should feel the alternator pulley slip and the internals carry on moving for about ½ a turn

Is this what should happen if the alternator one way clutch is working correctly, or does this happen when it fails? I'll try this tomorrow.
Can you buy the one way clutch as a separate item, or do you have to replace the alternator as a unit.
Many thanks

If it slips it is working, if it drives in both directions it is faulty. You can buy them on their own but are a git to get off without the special tools.

Tried this this morning, and yep, no slip. My brother works for a car parts supplier so has managed to get the pulley and also he says he has the tool. Going to pop up tonight and fit the offending item.
After my previous post I had a look around youtube, and there are quite a few videos showing how to remove the pulley....which makes sense to replace the pulley rather than the whole alternator as a unit.
Will let you know later after this is replaced.
Thanks

Replaced the pulley tonight. Had to remove the alternator because I couldn't get the tool in straight enough due to it fouling on the aircon pipe and falsework.
Just for info, the pulley has a left hand thread...........after trying to turn myself inside out trying to undo a "normal" right hand thread.
Anyway, alternator back on, tensioner & belt refitted and voila.........no noises whatsoever when starting the car. Steering turned both full locks without a squeek.
Thanks Crasher....you are the "font of all knowledge" !!
