car is a 95 n reg only problem i can find with it is the fuel gauge reads quarter of a tank and dosnt move been told by the previous owner that its faulty i have read that its possibly linked to a bad earth at the rear lights but cant seem to find the problem

The fuel level sensor is in the tank. The first thing to do is remove the inspection cover under the rear seat and check the cabling to the
sensor I assume this car is 2 two wheel drive and not an avant. Pull the connector off and place a 58/60 ohm resistor across the two pins of the connector inline with the keyway. The gauge should now read full. Regards Peter

what pins do i need to cross to get the guage to move around as it appears to judder like it is sticking

Waht part of "the two pins of the connector inline with the keyway" did you not understand. If you are doing this correctly then you have a connection problem exempt is does not judder around when the sensor is connected. What resistor are you using ans what is the mas reading on the gauge.
