I've just purchased the above for my wife, I'm new to the forum.

She really likes the car, but finds one thing annoying. Both the radio and the instrument panel have clocks, but there is no outside temperature gauge?

I can't understand the need for two clocks; both the driver and passenger can see the clock on the radio (if turned on in the menu).

The driver’s handbook states the instrument panel may have a clock or temperature gauge fitted.

Is the instrument panel reprogrammable to change it from clock to outside temperature gauge?

Thanks for any suggestions

Do you have a button on the bottom of the wiper stalk? If so, press that and the screen should cycle thorugh some different options.

Hi Chris,

No there's no button on the stalk.

I guess 'Special Edition' may mean what's taken off the car!

My wife had a 2003 Corsa before and is saying "I thought I was moving up market to an Audi" !!

Neither of us noticed it when on the test drive.

Cheers

That is very odd- every Audi I have been in has an outside temp gauge, even the Polo I had for a courtesy car once had one. I'm guessing your car doesn't have a central screen between the speedo and rev counter which is known as the DIS- this carries the temp gauge and shows what radio channel you are on.

Hi,

Yes it does have a DIS, but it's not in that. The second clock is in the rev. counter above the date display, that's where the handbook says there's an option of clock or temperature gauge.

Very odd to have two clocks and no temperature gauge, the radio/CD is the original fit so that's always had a clock on it.

I'll try asking a main dealer, but from previous experience this does not always provide an answer!

Thanks

Rod

So there's a DIs but no stalk button, I don't think you have the full DIS and can't scroll through the functions that it has thus not showing the outside temp.

That's odd because I thought the temp gauge would've been permanent like it is on my A6 below the radio display on the DIS.

Yes all Audi's I've driven with the old style DIS have the temp displayed on the DIS - in fact this pic I believe is from a newer A3 with black and white screenhttp://www.audi.co.uk/content/audi/new-cars/a3/a3/saving-you-fuel/drivers-information-system/_jcr_content/main-stage/tab_content/container1/generic_image.img.png

Heres the DIS that I think the Special Edition has

Rod, could you take a picture of your DIS?

Wife's out in the car at present, but will do when she gets back. From memory it looks like the picture except it has gear engaged at the bottom, and radio/CD at the top (I think), the centre is blank. Pressing and holding in the knob on the rev counter causes the centre part to change momentally between oil, engine temp etc.

I'll confirm this all when she gets back.

Thanks for your help

Hi Again,

In the attached photos the first is with the engine running, when moving it does have the gear selected at the bottom as well

In the second photo I've pressed the button on the rev counter dial, that causes the display to cycle through oil, water temp etc (Not outside temp) then it automatically goes blank.

There is definitely no button on the end of either stalk.

Thanks

Rod

This looks odd as you definitely have a full size DIS screen. On the A4 the most basic DIS I recall is similar but will have the temp gauge and fuel range till empty showing permanently also. I don't think the screen is broken as it displays the warning icons when you run the check cycle.

It may be a case that this is an even more basic version of the DIS on the A3- but perhaps it can be enabled using vag-com, a lot of hidden Audi electronic goodies can be enabled using this tool, unfortunately I don't have access to it but a few members on here do.

I received this message from KodKod84:

"This looks odd as you definitely have a full size DIS screen. On the A4 the most basic DIS I recall is similar but will have the temp gauge and fuel range till empty showing permanently also. I don't think the screen is broken as it displays the warning icons when you run the check cycle.

Does anyone have access to vag-com and can tell me if the outside temperature gauge can be activated?

Thanks

Rod

Just found this on the internet from another 2008 A3 Special 1.9TDi Special Edition -

http://www.carshop.co.uk/images/global_auto/large/ve08axw_20.jpg

It clearly shows the temperature gauge. Does yours have the Fuel Range? If it doesnt then I suspect the trip computer would just need enabled in vcds.

Thanks Chris,

It doesn't have either the temperature gauge or fuel range showing. I've posted in the forum VCDS section hoping someone can tell me if VCDS can do this reset.

The cars an ex-Audi lease car, does seem odd to program these displays off if the associated hardware is already fitted in the car.

Thanks again

I thought if you didnt have the stalk controls then you wouldnt have the screen and would simply have a blanking plate where it should be. Because its an automatic they have to put the screen in to show the gear selection. The rest will be disabled as the option of the trip computer etc wasnt purchased. I presume someone will be able to activate it but you wont be able to cycle through the options without replacing the wiper stalk to have the option of cycling through the menus that it provides... for example mpg, average mpg, temp, duration of journey and of course it has "Twin Trip Computers" meaning it has one that wipes a few hours after a drive or if you turn your ignition on and off twice in rapid succession and one that stays perminatly so you can monitor your usage over a given period... but like i said without the stalk you wont be able to navigate around nor reset them as all 3 buttons are on that stalk.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

From what I've read it's possible to have the outside temperature and miles to empty activated.

Without the switch as you say I won't be able to cycle through the options, but miles to empty is option 1 so it defaults to that, which is ok with me.

I'm trying to find someone local with VAG-COM to assist me.

Cheers

Found a local VCDS user, he sorted the problem out for me.

He reset the instrument coding and I now have:

Miles to empty (Can't cycle onto other options as I don't have the stalk button) Not bothered about this.
Outside temperature gauge
Door/Seatbelt Bing-Bong

I did try an Audi main dealer, got "You can't turn these displays on with the Special Edition model".

Great

Yep I thought it would be something as simple as a recode with VCDS. There is a lot of things you can unlock with it.

Glad you're all sorted now :)

Hi all, please tell me how did you avoid the problem with the indication for empty washer fluid tank? Some people told me that this indication can be switched off with hardware fixing only.... See the images below:

Yes, but the tank has no sensor at all... And this indication is still ongoing :)

pin 1 in that connector needs to be grounded off i believe or decode the washer level via vcds.
