Hi,
Just a quick question.
I'm looking at a 130 bhp 5 speed highline, is it true that the 5 speed version of the 130 lump has less torque than it's 6 speed sibling? also why were the highlines only fitted with the 5 speed box and not the 6 speed?
Will the 5 speed 130 go as well as the 130 6 speed? also will fuel economy be the same or worse?
Are the torque figures different on both engines?
Any help appreciated!
It is true.
The 6sp has 310nm, the 5sp has 285nm.
They are the both the same 0-60 and max speed.
It all depends what you are after, the 5 speed (I've got a 5 speed Highline) is a bit lazier to drive with less cog swapping, it is by know means slow though. The 6 speed is going to be more involved and no doubt quicker across country. Cruising wise though the same.
So I've read, the 5 speed box is stronger than the 6, I cannot back that up or substantiate it though.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I have a GT TDI 115 Golf at the moment with a 6 speed box. Would the 130 5 speed passat be quicker than that, through the gears and overtaking etc?

Nope, the passat is a heavy barge and 15 extra horses don't make for a faster car than a golf ! The 6 speed is stronger than the 5 speed one but they suffer diff bearings faults !

I think you would be hard pushed to notice any performance difference from the 5 speed to the 6. In my opinion you don't really need a 6 speed box on these cars due to the amount of torque they have; it is also ironic that VW rate the 6 speed as being the stronger box hence allowing it slightly more torque yet it tends to be this gearbox that causes the most problems due to bearing failure whereas the 5 speed seems fairly bulletproof. My Highline has done 184k miles now and has been remapped to 170 bhp since 120k, I've had no issues at all and the clutch is still the original. They are great cars!

The 01E is known to take 600 Bhp and up to 1000 Nm of torque without too much bother...the 5speed one wont do better than 400 Bhp and maybe 500 Nm ! There's massive difference between the audi 01E and the passat 01E boxes as fitted to the passat, i had a few audi's with high mileage and never had a problem with the gearbox...The getrag 01E used to belong in a porsche, a bit crude without forward syncromeshes but strong nevertheless.
