Passat Automatic Gearbox issues?

Hi

Wondering if anyone can help me with an issue on my passat

2000 Plate Passat 2.5 TDi

about 4 the car lost all gears, no forward or reverse, (just parked it up)

went and shifted it then last week and seemed to go forward ok, but still no reverse

over the last week the prioblems have been intermittent, sometime will take the gears, sometimes not..............

any ideas? im no mechanic but my guess would be gearbox, however I am led to believe that they have an ecu for the box?

car in good nick, shame to scrap it if i can sort it

A VAG fault code read would be the best thing to start with. Go to a dealer or VW specialist, a generic reader would probably not be useful.

thanks for the reply, i was hoping someone else may have had the same or similar problems before that could offer some advice, my nearest VAG dealer is 110 miles away, would cost a fortune just to get it shipped down there, may look at breaking the car
