hey, i have a 2004 audi a3 2.0 tdi sport.. needs a new power steering rack :(
whats the part number i need please??
thanks,
i have found one with this part number.. 1K2423051BB
would it fit?
thanks!

That will possibly fit but you need to establish the part number of the rack fitted to your car first as some conversion parts may be required.

any ideas how i would go about doing that? without taking off the rack :(
thanks for the help!

PM me your registration number.

From your chassis number it looks like your car will have a generation 2 steering rack as this was introduced at chassis WAUZZZ8PX4A090001, its close though because there is the annoying asterisk after that chassis number which means the change point is vague but I think you are far enough away at just under 7000 cars later. With your chassis number I can see the rack you would need is VAG part number 1K2 423 055 J and according to ETKA you will need a wiring set, part number 1K2 971 111 AJ if you use that rack. The rack you have found, part number 1K2 423 051 BB changed to 1K2 423 055 F and then 1K2 423 055 J so I think you should be able to fit the rack you have found and you will not need the wiring adapter set.

wow! thankyou very much for your help. i'm over the moon that i can buy that rack, knowing that it 'should' go on my car. and its only costing me £50 off ebay! so thats great.

Yes it most certainly does and sometimes even a registered copy of the latest VCDS will not do it, I often have to use the dealer system VAS PC.

A very early 8P A3 and almost certainly this car will have the first generation rack fitted so if you wish to change to a Gen 2 rack there are some conversion steps required.

1K2 423 051 CG, CH, CJ, CK or 3C2 423 051 AL are possible numbers for GEN 1 racks.

Hi there,
My Audi A3 2003 8P has the same problem... I took it to an Audi Specialist in London and they diagnosed that the steering rack is faulty. They quoted me £1400!
Can you advise me on what the best and reasonably priced option is?
I've heard that BBA Reman may rebuild the steering rack for around £400 and it may not need programming to the car as it is still the original steering rack made for the car...
My VIN is: WAUZZZ8P54A092898
I would truly appreciate your advice,
Ozzie

Fit a genuine rack, I will not fit non genuine rebuilt racks. If the rack comes off the car it will need re-matching to the ECU even if the same rack is re-fitted ALTHOUGH sometimes they will reset after being driven for a while, it is not guaranteed though. Your car has the failure prone first generation rack and the replacement is third generation. The rack is £909.72 and on top of this there is labour and some additional parts required such as a £100 ish wiring harness.

Thanks for the speedy reply, so would you say that including the wiring loom/harness, additional parts, and labour @60 p/h that quote its about right?
Crasher
16-02-2013, 12:13 AM
Well £60 per hour is not Audi labour, that is what someone like me charges so yes, about right for a specialist.
Gen 3 is now running on a K version guys, just to help everyone :)
Ozzie just get Crasher to do it, he knows what he's doing, allot dont tbh & its a pita to do imho as done few myself.

Great, thanks guys! Crasher, I've got to wait till payday now... end of the month.
Hi guys, I have the same problem on my Audi A3 2003 2.0L FSI 8P. Quote from local Audi specialist using the Audi genuine part was huge, not realistic for a 10 year old car.
I think it is a very early 8P model based on the VIN, so it probably has a Gen 1 rack. I'm trying to work out:
a) would a (much cheaper) reconditioned rack work and be safe to drive?
b) which rack part numbers would fit the car? which ones will need a loom and which wont?
That's a lot to ask i know but I'm very grateful for any help you can provide. Feel free to PM or email me etc.
Jim
If you replace with a recon Gen1 rack you won't need the loom.
Can you not get your rack refurbed

I was advised to get a new one by the local Audi guy. Could be an option though.
When I had my daughter's A3 done a couple of years ago we had the newest generation fitted.
No problems since.
It was just under 1K fitted.

Hi there, I hope someone can help me (Crasher possible) I have an A3 with the same steering rack problem. I have tried to get the part number but it looks like you need to drop the subframe which I don't fancy doing. Can anyone tell me what part number my rack is so I can buy a 2nd hand one and also if I get the same rack (I guess I have to have the same) if there is anything else I would need to do. VIN: WAUZZZ8P54A157300
thanks in advance for any help.

As your car is March 2004 production it should have a 1K2 423 055 and these were superseded in production late 2005 by the B, then in early 2006 the C, 2007 the D, 2008 the E, early 2009 the F, then the G and H and J and currently the K which is about £930 exchange from VAG UK for part number 1K2 423 055 KX. And there are also X versions of all plus a random AX when there was no A. Cars before VIN WAUZZZ8P54A020001 require the wiring conversion piece 1K2 971 111 D for a 2nd Gen rack, a 3rd Gen rack requires harness 1K2 971 111 AJ. I STRONGLY advise against buying a used steering rack.
Hi all. Just a quick update in case you're interested: my power steering starting working again today.
Haven't done anything to it other than a few short trips since the local garage had a poke around 2 weeks ago. It just started working after running for a while, stopping the engine for fuel, then re-starting. I've taken it out for short drives without the power steering (red light was on and steering was very heavy). After doing a few miles this afternoon it just came back on good as new! I'm sure the problem will be back but seems odd that it is only intermittent. Wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why?
Also, Crasher - if you're reading this - I'd be interested to know if you think a second hand rack is unsafe, or a waste of money, or both..?!

I have a big issue with used safety critical parts plus the later system is much better and less prone to being difficult to set up. To me fitting a used steering rack is like fitting a used brake master cylinder, unacceptable. I have a contact at ZF who gets racks for me at a good price. The worry I have is the thought of it failing mid corner with a slightly built lady customer driving who is likely not to be able to adapt and .........

hi there I have a audi a3 2.0fsi 2003 plate I have the part number off the rack but can not fine one with the same part number anywhere the part number is 1k2 423 051 n
I would probably say it is a first generation rack reading previous threads as it a early model , is there and other racks with a different part number that would fit mine would be much appreciated if anyone could help me ????????

Firstly it will have to be a 2004 model, that is when the 8P type started from even though some were built in 2003. The part number 1K2 423 051 N does not exist. The possible numbers are 1K2 423 055, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K or L

I can't agree with the concept of the cars age determining how much you spend on a critical safety device. If you fit a cheap rack or second hand one it can be a total nightmare to get the electronics adapted, you can spend hours messing around and then end up taking it back out again. Personally I would recommend a genuine ZF exchnage unit. The genuine number is 1K2 423 055 JX at £1009 and you need the wiring set 1K2 971 11AJ at £94. This makes the ZF rack number you need 7805.955.169 http://www.zf.com/brands/content/en/zf_lenksysteme/homepage_zfls/index.html

Hi, first timer here! Hope someone can help...
I too have had a failed power steering rack on my A3 2.0 FSI. I've taken a look through this thread and agree in an ideal world (one where I had money), I'd replace all new parts.
Unfortunately I need to consider reconditioned ones as an option but upon researching the model number currently in my car, I can't seem to find one anything like it.
The car is a '53 plate and the current rack number is :
1K1 909 143 L
Is it possible another version would be compatible?
Appreciate any feedback and recommendations.
Cheers
Crasher
23-04-2015, 10:55 AM
1K1 909 143 L is not a good part number but the first group 1K1 indicates it is a left hand drive specific part and the centre group 909 suggests it is an electrical control unit along the lines of a garage door opener, so the number must be for internal reference, not part replacement purposes. On a 2004 model the rack could be Generation 1 or 2 but in theory Gen 1, 2 or 3 can be fitted. Unfortunately you can experience terrible problems getting Gen 1 and 2 racks to set up, I have to do a lot for local garages who have run into trouble. When we do these we will only fit the ZF exchange part 7805.955.169 together with the VAG Gen 1/2 to Gen 3 adapter harness 1K2 971 111 AJ which is £94.76 from any VAG dealer, I am not aware of it being available anywhere but genuine. Unfortunately genuine ZF spares are very difficult to purchase and this is made more irritating for me as if I was to throw a stone really hard out of my car park, I could nearly break a window at ZF UK! Normally I have to use a customer who works there to get me in the door!

Hi all!
I have Audi A3 -03 8P1 model (WAUZZZ8P34A014281, engine BGU) and steering rack is dead. My question is can I replace it with whatever gen 1 or gen 2 steering rack model (used part)? Or is there only some exact models which fits to this car? Thank you in advance!

You can fit a Gen 1, 2 or 3 rack to your car BUT to fit a Gen 3 rack you have to use the VAG conversion harness, the part number is in my previous post.

Thanks for quick reply. I'm going to buy 2nd hand part. There are lot of steering racks with different part number available in the car breakers, from VW, Skoda and Audi. Are all of those gen 1 and gen 2 racks compatible with my Audi (older than 2008 are gen 2?)?
I haven't checked the current part number, my ETKA is not working...

Unfortunately car breakers usually don't give the part number, only cars VIN-code.
Here are some alternatives:

I can’t go into the VIN’s of the other cars but your car definitely has a GEN1 rack, now I am back at work today I could look it up using your VIN. That means the part number for a genuine exchange rack on your car is currently 1K1 423 055 MX and the parts system says you also need 2 clamps 1K0 423 933, 2 clamps N 908 349 01, assembly carrier 1K0 199 313 AL (a very expensive part), GEN3 adapter harness 1K1 971 111 AJ and if required, new consul 1K0 199 296 J. The racks that this selection of parts the MX replaces is a bit ambiguous as some should be CX which is GEN2 and a slightly different process but as far as I can see the list is
1K1 423 051 > MX
1K1 423 051 AT > CX
1K1 423 051 AS > CX
1K1 423 051 BA > CX
1K1 423 051 BQ > CX
1K1 423 051 CN > MX
1K1 423 051 BG > CX
3C1 423 051 > CX
3C1 423 051 T > MX
1K1 423 051 DD > MX
1K1 423 051 DS > MX
1K1 423 051 EA > MX
1K1 423 051 ES > MX
561 423 051 C > MX
561 423 051 M > MX
1K1 423 051 CC > CX
1K1 423 051 CP > MX
1K1 423 051 FA > MX
1K1 423 051 FE > MX
1K1 423 055 > CX
1K1 423 055 AX > CX
1K1 423 055 B > CX
1K1 423 055 BX > CX
1K1 423 055 C > MX
1K1 423 055 E > MX
1K1 423 055 F > MX
1K1 423 055 G > MX
1K1 423 055 H > MX
1K1 423 055 J > MX
1K1 423 055 K > MX
1K1 423 055 M > MX
AND I am sure there are many more, using a second hand one and working out its suitability is a bewildering subject!

GEN3 rack is too expensive and there is too much parts to be replaced. Do you have any experience if GEN2 is fully compatible with GEN1?
Crasher
21-09-2015, 01:19 PM
I have only ever taken off GEN2 right hand drive racks and replaced them with genuine GEN3 right hand drive racks. We were lucky that there seemed to be very few GEN1 right hand drive cars and most had been upgraded to GEN2 whilst still under warranty. I often have other motor traders bring me in cars they have fitted second hand racks to and sometimes it will not set up. If you fit a GEN2 LHD rack to a GEN1 LHD car, I think you need a different adapter harness to when you fit a GEN3, I get the part number as being 1K1 971 111 B and they are around 200 Euro.

06-03-2016, 05:59 PM
By PQ35 I mean the cars platform it is built on, another way of saying A5 but that gets confusing with the Audi of the same name and it is easier than saying Audi A3 8P, TT 8J, Q3 8U, VW Touran 1T, Caddy 2K, Golf/Jetta 1K/5K/16, Golf Plus 5M, Tiguan 5N, Scirocco 13, New Beetle 1C/9C/16, Eos 1F, Seat Altea 5P, Toledo 5P, Leon 1P, Skoda Octavia 1Z, Yeti 5L etc etc. REALLY, I should not call it a rack either, it is the "steering gear", the rack is the main part inside- it's a bit like people calling dampers shock absorbers when a shock absorber is actually the spring....
In what way did these parts not work? My experience of the PQ35 steering gear in left hand drive is limited and we had very few RHD cars with the GEN1 gear.
1K0 909 143 J, 1K0 909 144 H are not part numbers as such, more casting and internal use numbers on the steering gears electronics box. 1K1 423 051 EA is a "rack" and changed part number to 1K1 423 055 K, then 1K1 423 055 M and finally is now 1K1 423 055 MX.
What your car used new isn't really relevant, what should be done is repair it according to the VIN specific instructions laid out in the parts system which states to use 1K1 423 055 MX after handing in any one of a dozen or more units which are acceptable as an exchange, 1K1 423 055 EA is an acceptable "core surcharge" unit. To fit this GEN3 unit you will need the conversion harness for left hand drive, subframe to suit your engine type and possibly one of the wishbone consuls.

If the control module is defective you will have to fit a new steering gear unit and on your car it is likely to have a GEN1 unit where the new replacements are GEN3 and there is quite a lot of conversion work to do to make this work.

Hi I'm wondering if you can help me I have a 2003 plate Audi A3 1.6 petrol that is playing up on me, the power steering light comes on intermittently and when I’m starting the car up from cold the warning light comes on and I have no power steering on the car, however after a 10 mins car journey I restart the engine and it corrects it self, after reading through these forums I think it might be the rack that needs replacing but not sure of part number to purchase one? I've spoke to a couple of garages and they are not willing to replace due to Audi electrics / reprogramming problems afterwards, any help or advice on this I'd be ever so grateful. Feel like I'm not getting any support from local garages :/ thank you. Alice

Not Professor Roberts by any chance? Your car will actually be a 2004 model, what we call an 8P and it will be a very early one at that. It may even be early enough to have what is known as the GEN1 rack and to replace this with a later GEN3 unit you need to make a wiring change as osmon says. The official way is to buy a new GEN3 rack from Audi with a conversion wiring harness and using this method any competent VAG specialist would be able to perform the job. Using a second hand rack can get tricky, even an aftermarket exchange unit can cause terrible set up and calibration problems, which is why you have come across resistance to doing the job.

Thanks for your reply, just spoke with Audi they gave me this part number 1K423055 but weren't very helpful at all unfortunately as in no other information or advice was given to me, nothing about the wiring harness you mentioned. For the rack they quoted me £1280 just for the part! Wow .. Barely think my actual car is worth that much, ridiculous amount of money! I've found a garage outside Chester that will get part & fit for £1350 and do some other bits too like tyre alignment. Is it 100% not worth to risk buying a reconditioned part? It's driving me mad this car just recently! Many thanks for your reply. Alice

Alice
Costs for my steering rack replacement, as I told before, was £200. I bought 2nd part from car breaker and did replacement job myself.

The current up to date part number of a rack for your car is 1K2 423 055 KX which retails at £1061.04 inc VAT and this Gen3 rack requires wiring harness 1K2 971 111 AJ at £103.16 when installed in a car with a Gen 1 or Gen 2 rack. IF the car has a Gen1 rack, then the conversion also requires a subframe component changing, which for a 1.6 petrol is part number 1K0 199 313 AL and these are £304.42 and on top of this a new clamp is required PLUS in certain situations it may be necessary to change the right hand side wishbone consul which is another £151.68 and really, you should do both sides! The cost and complexity of the job are dependant on whether your car has a Gen 1 or 2 rack fitted.

2nd part mean that it is used part, it is removed from VW Golf 2004.

Done loads of research on this. I can't afford the 3rd generation 1K2 423 051 J. So....
My rack number is 1K2 423 051 N 2003 audi A3 2.0 TDi mk 2 and I have found steering rack 1K2 423 051 AQ which is from a 2005 golf 2.0 TDI. Will this rack work?
Crasher
17-06-2016, 03:27 PM
1K2423051N does not go in, that is a casting or manufacturing number, not the part number. There was
1K2 423 055, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J then K or KX, which is the current number. X means it is exchange
1K2 423 051 AQ changed to 1K2 423 055 FX, then JX (requiring the adapter harness) and then KX as above. 1K2 423 051 AQ may work, I have never tried it and never would, you will have to find out.

Thanks a lot crasher. Thing is the car has done 150000 miles and is worth least than a grand so I have no choice but to try. Is it possible however that a golf 2005 rack can work in a 2004 audi a3?

Put it this way, if either car had a new rack from VAG, they would use the same part number.

Hi all
Thanks for your help regarding my power steering rack. My car has been in the garage in tattenhall outside Chester for best part of 2 weeks, the mechanic took my rack off and sent it away to be repaired. There's is a lifetime guarantee on it so hopefully will be ok, had the tyres re aligned, labour and few other bits and the bill came to £640 - not bad considering the new part quote without labour was £1200+
Long live my Audi and thank you to the garage who fixed it!!

Hi,
My rack has also failed 2004 A3 FSI 2.0 (RV04 KYX)
Is this likely to be a GEN1 rack due to it being an older 8P?
How can I find what additional components I would need to step up to a GEN 3 or fit a reconditioned GEN 2? I know I would need the harness for the Gen 3, but is there anything else required?
Thanks
Greg

What is needed to go GEN3, other than the harness, varied by VIN three times in the 2004/5 model year.

Trust me to have an awkward car :D
The vin is WAUZZZ8P64A052071.
I called the local Audi Dealer and they said I would need a gen 2 rack and a new loom.
1K2423055KX Steering Box £1043.65
1K2971111AJ Loom £103.16
Does that seem about right?
Thanks for the help :)

Your car was built 06-08-2003 and has an AXW engine. The car was built with a Gen1 rack which you replace with a Gen3 (Gen 2 is no longer available) which is 1K2 423 055 KX (this is the upto 2013 rack and is still fitted new on the Caddy, CC, Scirocco and Yeti) which I get as being £1061.4 inc VAT plus the harness as you say at £103.16, according to the system, your car (i.e. with an AXW engine) MAY also require the centre section of the subframe part 1K0 199 313 AL at £304.42, some retaining clips 1K0 423 933 x 2 and N 908 349 01 x 2 for the boots and a bracket 1K0 199 296 J at £151.68 MAY be required, you don’t know until you try by looking at the part numbers on those components … on top of this you will also need a huge pile of new one time only fasteners, the ones for the subframe alone number around 17 and cost around £3 each. To remove and replace the subframe and the side bracket you must pin the original position with the proper VAG locking pins T10096 and still you will need alignment after… can you imagine trying to pitch this job to a customer standing in front of you, a bill for £2k on a car worth £1K max....

Yeah thats pretty crazy. Ive had the car for 9 years so most likely the original rack is still in there.
Will drop the subframe and have a look maybe ill be lucky and find something simple like a damaged cable as the problem is the no comunication error.
Realistically i may see if i can find a good 2nd hand part but unlikly if it was only used for a year or so back in 2004.
Thanks again.

Just a quick update.
Steering Rack is out....... the original parts are.
Steering Gear 1K2 423 051AC
Sub Frame 1k0 199 369 F
Side Mounts 1k0 199 296 E and 1k0 199 295 E
Audi seem convinced that 1K2 423 055 KX will drop in fine with the new loom.
I've looked at the sub frame and the side mounts and can't see any breaking changes between the old and the new parts.
So might give the Gen 3 ago.
Also the gear box engine mount bushing is split so might as well change that, and the garage that had a look before didn't put the plastic tray back in the bottom of the engine bay  Lots of fun for next weekend :D
Thanks again for the help.

Subframe suffix F onwards and side mount 295 E are correct for use with a GEN3 rack.

Perfect thanks for all your help.
So now I can get it all sorted, just need a garage to put new bushings in the gear box mount and grab some alignment pins to get the sub frame back in square.
Crasher
05-09-2016, 11:38 AM
There is no point in the alignment pins now, you have lost the setting. When you put the new bolts in, just do the torque setting (most are 100Nm) but don't apply the 90 degree stretch and take the car for alignment and then when it is set up, apply the stretch. We use the Febi 45308 repair kit but it is on back order but we have it is stock, £42 inc P&P.

Hi Crasher, was wondering if you could help me with the part number that would be ok for my 2007 S3? I'm struggling looking for one here an you seem more than knowledgable about this, your help would be much appreciated! Could I fit the rack 1k2 423 055 j or 1k2 423 055 k? If you need any more info off me then just ask. Thanks in advance
Crasher

Your car would probably have a 1K2 423 055 C which you would replace with a 1K2 423 055 KX if using a genuine rack.
You could directly replace this with the 1K2 423 055 or B if you were daft enough or the later D, E, F. If you use the 1K2 971 111 AJ adapter harness you could use the G, H or J. If I was fixing it I would use the ZF boxed Bosch K S01 000 747.

Apologies for bumping an older thread, however i was wondering if you could possibly find out what steering rack is currently fitted on my golf? Mine needs replacing due to play within the rack itself and i dont really want to be forking out for a brand new rack just yet, so i wanted to put either the same rack on that i currently have or just one that would fit and is second hand, my car details are:
REG-NV57 RRO
VIN-WVWZZZ1KZ8W192710
If you could let me know then that would be most appreciated!

Hi all sorry for reviving an old thread. I'm having steering rack problem with my 2006 Skoda octavia mk2 (Vin TMBBD41ZX62158327). Not sure what generation of power steering it has (I'm guessing a gen 2). It recently crapped on me, giving the 3 beep red steering warning light. My only option is to hunt for a used unit from ebay as where I'm from (Malaysia) is a pita to find parts, not to mention that Skoda dealership here is almost dead. I don't think that I would be able to source for a gen 3 one so gen 2 is my only option, assuming that I have a gen 2. What is the part number that I should look for? Much appreciated for any valuable input.

Eddie, your car has a Gen2 rack, part number 1K2 423 055 C so you wouldn’t fit a GEN1, part numbers 1K2 423 051 CG, CH, CJ, CK or fit one earlier than yours so look for 1K2 423 055 C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K or L but J, K and L are GEN3.

Hi again,
I decided to give it a scan with my VCDS regarding the problem. 2 faults came out. No suprise there.
Address 44: Steering Assist Labels: 1Kx-909-14x-44.clb
Part No: 1K2 909 144 J
Component: EPS_ZFLS Kl.5 D04 1606
Shop #: WSC 00000 000 00000
VCID: 3365447B527706A690-8066
2 Faults Found:
00003 - Control Module
014 - Defective
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
000 - - - Intermittent
I cleared the code and something funny happened. The red steering warning light disappeared like it's supposed to, and the power steering works like a charm again! I have yet to give it a drive but the steering wheel turns fine from end to end in the parking lot. Does it mean it still needs to be replaced or it's just working intermittently before it decides to go belly up again?

Your car has a late GEN2 rack and so is probably 1K2 423 055 E or possibly F but the next step is GEN3 and that means using the conversion harness. The best way to know what is in there is with a code read but doing the job with an exchange Bosch rack means not having to search high and low and compromise the job.

Not as far as I can work out from the VIN breaks and part number supersession dates as the last GEN2 rack was the F BUT as I said, I have never done this and never would.

I would like to buy brand new unit. Orig part number is 1K1909143K which is first gen with four bolt mount. Id like to buy new unit. Could someone please help and give the replacement part number(s) because 1K1909143K is not manufacture anymore.

You have to fit a Gen3 unit with the conversion harness. If you private message me your cars Vehicle Identification Number I can tell you the genuine numbers and the part number to buy a new ZF rack from Bosch. Early PQ35 platform cars with a Gen1 rack often also require subframe and consul changes to accommodate the new rack.
As you were, I see your VIN, I will get back later.

ETKA FI suggestion says you need
1K1 423 055 MX steering gear
1K1 971 111 AJ harness for servotronic
1K0 199 313 AL sub-frame
1K0 199 296 J bracket
There is a Bosch recon exchange rack under part number K S01 002 838 or a new unit that does require the additional parts under number K S00 000 776

Hi and sorry for dredging up a really old post but ive been doing alot of research and came across this thread.
I have a mk5 golf and the steering rack has play so i am looking at getting a 2nd hand replacement for it.
I have the rack off and believe it to be a gen 2 rack.
Only part number i can see is
1K2 909 144 M which im assuming is just the electric pump bit.
I have found a fair few that are local but i am not sure which part number/s would be a direct replacement and which ones i would need the harness for too.

Just stumbled upon this long and informative topic.
I have a Touran 2004 1.6fsi, VIN WVGZZZ1TZ5W030704, BLP040573 engine, 09G auto gearbox, car has done 178K miles,
I think it still has the original steering rack, not sure if it is GEN1, 2, or 3.
Latest problem is amber steering light comes on occasionally, sometimes red, then goes away. My garage say there is intermittent communication on Canbus wires somewhere in the length of the steering loom.
Does anyone please know part number of loom I need to buy to replace the suspected faulty one.
Alternatively, part number of a later replacement rack, and its associated loom.
