View Full Version : Upgrading Midline MFD up to Highline on Golf MK6

Hi all,

I have a UK Spec 1.6TDI SE MK6 Golf with Factory Sat Nav. Unfortunately the instrument cluster MFD is the midline type and I don't have a MFSW. My intention is to swap it out for the highline cluster as I have now added Bluetooth to the setup. Upgrading to highline makes sense to me since I will have the bluetooth and nav stuff in front of me afterwards. My questions are:

Can the highline be fully utilised considering I only have the trip/reset rocker switch on the end of the wiper stalk (i.e even the setup menu with coming home lights etc) ?

If I were to purchase a brand new highline cluster and fit it myself, would I be able to set the correct mileage using VCDS without the SKC (I am assuming the SKC would set itself automatically with it being a fresh setup?).

Thank you!

Hi all,

I have a UK Spec 1.6TDI SE MK6 Golf with Factory Sat Nav (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_nkw=sat+nav&clk_rvr_id=240761904576&afsrc=1).
Those aren't Factory Sat Nav's those are general Sat Nav's, the factory ones are RCD510 and RNS510.

If you aren't buying a MFSW then you should be able to set then MFD menu setting using the switches on the wiper stalk as you do at the moment.

I'm no expert in this but I know VCDS won't change the mileage though you shouldn't need to do that as that is stored in the ECU not instruments. VCDS won't tell you the SKC either, if you've had the car from new then there should be a number on a tag on the spare set I think this could be the SKC so don't ever loose it?

I think your taking on a big job for a few extra settings, do you have VCDS?

Sorry you didn't post that Sat Nav link this stupid site did?

I think recoding the instruments can only be done by a dealer, even if the instruments are brand new. Definitely if they are second hand.
I believe the car won't start untill they have set it up. If you acquire and fit the instruments yourself, you would have to tow the car in to get the imobiliser sorted.
Or, pay the dealer to fit, which becomes a very expensive upgrade.

Let us know if you manage to do it though!

Hi Hughesynights, thanks for the reply.

I did the coding myself on the MK5 I used to have, again upgrading from a midline to highline. The donor cluster was second hand , but with the older clusters (that was a 2004 model), I could retrieve the SKC. I understand that with the newer ones this isn't possible.

I remember someone on vwvortex saying for a new unit the car would automatically get the SKC from the ECU on a new unit, that was for the Golf MK5 clusters though... Now if this works on the MK6, perhaps I could do away with a trip to the dealer all together...

I do have a 4 digit number on a tag attached to the spare key, not sure what this is as it is scribbled in pen. Will need to investigate some more.

Anyone tried a cluster swap on a MK6?

Looked into this and I don't have the Secret Code for coding a new cluster so it's definitely a dealer job. Has anyone upgraded their MK6 Cluster up to Highline from lowline/midline? If so, how did you do it? Thanks.

Does anyone have a howto on this please? I have a Golf Mk6 with what I guess is a low-line(?) - the cluster display is the ugliest one, with the 7-segment numbers and pre-set icons etc. I would like to upgrade to a cluster with the dot-matrix display but I want to know what's involved before I buy a cluster.

If you look at the link below, mine is like the one on the left and I would like to install one similar to the image on the right.

Thanks
