mw not working

My symphony radio works perfect apart from the mw doesnt work any ideas ?

Mw ? Why would you want it to ? Is there still stations on it ? If there is, are they still krap reception with a really anoying beeping noise ?

BBC radio Scotland and BBC radio five live both for sport and current affairs, Do you have a symphony in your A4 as If you dont use mw maybe you be up for a swap:p

My symphony also does this - I suspect amplifier at base of aerial - ebay about 30.00 - but haven't bothered to get one yet. vinpetrol - you need to read fjtwelve's full story of the 2.5 on the other Audi forum!!

Is the aerial amp sited above the roof lining in the back ?

I think it is there, which is main reason I've not done it! - but I did aerial swap on passat estate and it was accessible through interior light hole, once light was removed, so maybe not too bad.

I know five live and local radio stations still use mw but to be honest it is particularly poor on any vehicle primarily because it's moving, any AM station (medium wave) is next to useless for decent reception which is why our cheapjack government opted for it in the 60's, the yanks went straight to FM because they had radio people who knew what they were talking about and didn't want a cheap service.
Have you considered a DAB? the reception will be much better and anyway AM is off next year in any case.

yes its AKE. I tend to drive fairly enthusiastically. Was averaging 32mpg before i started, erm, altering it. Before the current smoking problem started i was averaging 30mpg, but if you tread on it hard any number beginning with a 2 is good.

I know its bad and would love dab especially up here in the highlands. I use it in the house but I wasnt aware you could get it in the car. does it mean a new head unit ?

I am not keen on changing the head unit as I think the bose symphony is a good quality but the add on one seems a possibility. especially if AM is finished next year

I looked at reviews of these add on units - the Pure one seems good, but if you look at the radio forums AM is not finishing next year - no date has been given for finishing AM or FM as far as I can find out, the gov keeps backing down and also it seems DAB+ is going to appear making all the DAB units useless - have a read around before you decide and also look at coverage of DAB in your area - it seems that DAB is not ideal for moving use in a car.

I never heard of DAB+ I will look into it before commting to anything. Sounds like i will be as well to try and fix the old AM

As someone else mentioned further down the thread, the 'proposed' switch off of AM and FM has been shelved indefinitely.

It's no surprise really - if it had gone ahead, almost all of the vehicles on the road with more than two wheels (and some of those too) would be stuck with a radio that didn't do anything.

Seems like some witless divot in the previous administration hadn't though of that in the unseemly and ill-considered rush to flog off the frequencies.

Hi all

I now have a donor allroad.

I took the roof lining down in it to remove the part at the base of the aerial that is mentioned earlier in this topic. I got it off. It is actually the base of the aerial. I then took down my roof lining to find my one is completely different and is a much more basic aerial base. The system in mine is bose and is not in the donor vehicle . Does anyone have any idea as to why mw wont work ?

My understanding is that the lines which look like demister elements on the rearmost side windows (wierd spacing on them) actually comprise the AM part of the aerial mechanism. Suggest you check the wiring here first.

Thanks for the information . I would never of believed it ! I checked my donor allroad and it has the more basic sound system and no elements in the side window but the one with mw not working does have the elements in the rear side windows. I have no idea how it is wired but will check and update my progress
