Just had a quick look at my rear discs (A4 Avant Diesel 100bhp) to prepare myself for the job, I have the 7mm socket and drive, but I note that on the rear caliper bolt there is no room to get the ratchet drive/socket/7mm key in due to the lower suspension mount.
I have read elsewhere that there is enough room to slip the disc out without removing the caliper carrier, has anyone managed it?
If A8tech says the discs can be removed without taking the carrier then it can be done...

I can confirm that the caliper carrier does not need to be removed, you can just squeeze the disk out, note that a new disk will be a bit thicker but it will still pass the carrier, i just had to persuade mine with a big rubber mallet,,!!!!

Thanks chaps, any tips to loosen the disc if leaving the carrier on?

The conservative answer would be a rubber mallet, but your not going to reuse them so i`d go for a small lump hammer, mine weren`t to stuck on, just **** it on the bottom, turn 1/4 turn then **** bottom again then turn again.
Remember the new disks will be tight to squeeze on past the calliper bracket but i promise they will go on....Mine were slightly scored where they scratched past the caliper mount.

Cheers again - sorry to sound stupid here but are you whacking the front of it because with the guide still on there is no access to whack it from the rear...?

Anywhere you can see the back of the disk, i think from the side where the caliper should bolt on, you should be able to knock it there, mine just fell off so hopefully you won`t have to much trouble, clean everything up with a wire brush especially the guide channels on the caliper mount...

I did mine last week - The old discs came out without needing to remove the Carrier ( as they were very thin) but the new discs just did not want to slip in, the 7mm Hex bolt on the top of the Carrier was rounded, so the only way I could get this bolt out was to buy Irwin Bolt Grip, the 16mm socket in the set fitted over the Hex bolt ( had to bang it on using a Claw hammer - Side on) then I was able to use my 3/8 ratchet to get it out, then used a rubber mallet to knock the carrier out of the way enough to get the new disc on!
Also purchased some new Hex bolts from Audi ( part no: N 910 587 02) just bought the top bolts & only cost about £2
