Hi, I have a 2006 VW Passat 2.0L which has recently lost all the following; interior courtesy lights, map reading lights, front/rear interior lights, vanity mirror lights, courtesy light in the boot. All this happened while I was fitting tow bar electrics that some so called professionals made a fist of i.e. all wired from the 12v socket in the boot. I removed the side panel in the passenger foot well to run the cable through from the battery and the nearside side trims to run the cable through to the back so I did disturb things a bit. Initially I thought it was a fuse that had blown but have great problems identifying which one. I looked in the handbook to find the correct fuse and this shows fuses that I do not have. I bought a Haynes Manual and that shows the interior light circuit but no fuses in the diagram. A separate diagram of the fuse box alone shows fuses that I don’t have so I am at a loss as to where I go next. I tried another forum and found the same fault with a recommendation that F33 20amp was the correct fuse – I don’t have fuse in position F33 and as the lights were working a couple of days ago have to believe that the information is not appropriate to my model. In desperation I have checked all the fuses LH & RH fuse box and also the one under the bonnet with no luck. I have taken the glove box out hoping to find a wire out of the convenience unit, which incidentally was replaced but main dealer late last year because wouldn’t lock the car. It looked brand new and the wiring was new looking (no damp or corrosion at all) so I checked all the connections none loose.

The exact model details are Passat SE TDI 140 Auto (DSG) June 2006 registration. Variant AABKPX0, version FA6FA62E018STO0GG. Any advice would be very welcome as I am left with taking it to the garage for what may be a very simple fuse replacement.

Finding a fuse will be difficult....the interior lights haven't got one.
Did you disturb the onboard power supply control unit ?
Have a look at it and see if you have disturbed a relay. especially bottom one of three on the left side.
Where have you taken your new power supply from ?

Did exactly the same myself. Must be a common thing.

Thanks for the prompt reply guys. I have been doing a bit of investigation re Martin's comments. First didn't disturb the power supply but have since looked at it (with a tourch) and nothing seems out of place. Second, taken the new power suply direct from the battery terminal with it's own 15A fuse close to the connection point.
Manity said try fuse 15 in the right hand fusebox (passenger side). Well I don't have a fuse in position 15 at all.
I have been looking at my Haynes Manual again and come to the conclusion it may be a relay. Reason being that "Typical Interior Lighting" diagram shows all the affected items being supplied by a relay which is on the Power Supply Control Unit. Other items on the Powere Supply Control Unit i.e. Headlight Leveling/interior dimming switch are both still working. My problem now is trying to find the right relay to replace and how to get at it. Looking again at the Haynes Manual it doesnt identify which relay is it only says "d = Terminal 30 relay" which means nothing to my as I haven't even had a close look at the unti because it seems that you have to take half the dash out but the hinge clips look as though they may just pull out with care. One thing I have noticed is that you can't hear any clicking as you open the door try the map reading lights or switch the vanity mirrors on ignition on or off.
Not sure if any of this helps to find a solution but I would still like some assistance.
Cheers

Manity no problem VW do confuse the matter by refering to the right when we think they mean left. What I've done is log all the fuses I HAVE GOT if it's not listed I don't have it.
Drivers side (in the UK)
FC1,2,3,5,6,9,10,11,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,30, 33,37,39,43,44,45.

Passenger Side

The fuse allocations for the B6 are shown here. https://sites.google.com/site/1810martin/passat-b6-fuse-assignment
Don't go by the handbook. It is back to front. Pull the fuses and test them with low volts and a bulb to make sure they actually work.
Don't go by a visual check or a multimeter. Using a multimeter is not a good idea because it involves almost no current.

We had the same fault a few years ago after having a VW dealership fit a tow bar in our Touran. It turned out that somehow they managed to blow the onboard supply control unit - although the unit looked okay.

Thanks Martin, I'll have a look at it when I get the chance and get back to you.

Well it seems that everybody was right - and am I glad. My 30 year old son looked at the fuse box closely, I've got varifocals, and he-presto when he took out fuse 15 visually marked on the moulding, and we tested it, it had gone. Replaced it and all's well. Just shows that you should test rather rely on seeing the fault. "I guess I should have gone to Specsavers" . Thanks guys for your time. Hope to help you someday - have a good un. Mike
