View Full Version : Question very rough drive

my b6 diesel passat has always been very heavy and rough in city roads. that doesnt mean it has been brilliant on motorway. have to press it too hard even to cross 70mph. and its very rough on the city roads.
it has done 72k miles and recently had new clutch and new flywheel. the gear shifter is squeaking when i shift to first gear.
am sure one of the glowplus is gone. but thought that should not cause these symptoms i guess. engine starts fine everytime. i will get the glowplug changed eventually and planning to get servicing done aswell.
any ideas as to why its feeling very heavy and rough?? or are diesel 1.9 tdi meant to be so? i always wanted a passat and had it only for 6mths now and am fed up with this car already, thinking to move to a smaller one.:aargh4::aargh4:

Why do you think you have a glowplug fault. Do you mean you have a dash warning light ? If so, get a fault code read.

No martin, last time i scanned it, it said open circuit, this was when i posted here and you asked me to clear the fault and test it in a few days
did that and now the fault is back when i scan it. so am assuming, glowplug is gone.
i feel like i am pushing a tonne of metal in first gear and reaching 70mph needs a lot of acceleration. but dropping down is so quick, if i remove
my foot off the accelerator for one sec, speed drops to 50mph quite quickly. never had this experience with my previous cars.

Can you do a complete VCDS autoscan and post the results here. That way someone may spot something.

Someone like Martin or Crasher will advise you better than I can, but I'd suggest checking the wheels for heat (if one feels hotter than the rest after a bit of a run, its possible that the caliper is stuck on, on that wheel), or get the car up on axle stands with the wheels off, and get an assistant to pump the brake pedal and engage/disengage the handbrake whilst watching the calipers to make sure that everything moves accordingly.

Hi, I have checked the break disks after a short drive and none were warm. so it may not be calipers.
it may be me but i noticed the car is smoother when going on wet roads or in rain (did anyone experience this??) rest of the time its hard.
do the diesel cars need some sort of lubrication at some point? have fixed an appointment for full servicing at the dealer anyway. quoted £249.00
they said minor one is around 120 and this one is major as they change a few filters etc etc for 249. i havent got a service log, they said they will
provide one and stamp it for extra 10quid.
any comments??
by the way i have done the scan and these are the results:

As you say, the only obvious fault is the glowplugs. Change all 4 and make sure you use genuine VW or NGK. No other makes. Make sure you or the mechanic have a good look at number 2 glowplug to make sure the end hasn't snapped off.

do you reckon its better to change all the glowplugs martin?? any rough ideas on costs?? will get it done at dealer while am getting servicing done
martin1810
19-05-2011, 11:31 AM
The glow plugs are £25 each from VW. It's up to you how many you change. Most people recommend changing them as a set. They are cheaper as NGK's bought from a motor factor. Do not fit any other make....This is very important.
