Intermittant MMI Restart following Nav RetroFit (VCDS Logs included)

Hi All,

The car: A6 C6 Avant 2005, MMI High, Phone, AMI (retro Fit), Nav (retro Fit).

Although my car had MMI High it didn't have Nav from the factory. When I pressed the Nav button the screen said "Navigation not installed". So I bought a second hand Navigation Drive and new cables from Kufatec.

Initially I was getting "Please insert Navigation DVD" which has now been fixed by having the laser replaced.

This issue I have now is that the whole MMI system restarts intermittantly. It can be fine for 1 hour then restart or start restarting as soon as I start the car. Sometimes it restarts over and over again. Sometimes the sound and top part of the DIS stops but the main screen stays alive. Sometimes all the contols lock up (volume, etc) but the system stays alive.

I have had a good look at the optical cable supplied by Kufatec, the end fo the Audi cables look perfect and like looking at glass but the Kufatec cables look like they have light scratches running in one direction. Is this normal or does it suggest a faulty cable?

My internet research suggests this to be an optical issue but when I got a friend to scan using VCDS it didn't seem to show us which device was faulty. The scan with the Nav unit in the optical loop is attached. We also scanned with the Nav unit out of the optical ring which I can post if you think it might help.

Since running the scan's on Friday I have driven with the optical cable disconnected from the NAV (electrical still connected) and the fault happened on Saturday.

I have not disconnected the electrical from the NAV and testing to see if the fault happens again, but being intermittant I might be waiting a week or so.

This suggests to me that another part of the system have gone wrong while I have been fitting the nav. So how can I work out where this issue it comeing from?

Today's experience: Nav drive still completly disconnected. Radio went silent for about half a second, the top part of the DIS goes blank for 2 seconds.

A week ago we had another go with VCDS.

You may remember that the optical test showed ERROR on all components so we tried this again. First test ran only showing an error on the Telephone and the second test at -3db showed no errors. Third test back at standard light levels showed no errors so we focused on the battery manager issues.

After a bit of faffing about (VCDS not being able to apply changes) we managed to release the transtort mode. The thinking was that the battery manager may have been putting the network into safe mode. Once reset the full scan showed no errors so a dramatic improvement.

A further optical test at both light levels ran clean so I am now driving around to see if the issue comes back. So far so good but I have only covered around 25 miles. I have a long drive next weekend so that will tell if we have fixed it.

I did a 430 mile trip this weekend, 215 Saturday and 215 on Sunday and the whole MMI system was fully funcitioning so I think it's fixed! I had the navigation running the whole time and switched between AMI and Radio without any issues.

So if anyone else has MMI system issues, before you start buying new bits make sure all your fault codes are dealt with as you maybe suprised like me which ones cause knockon issues.

Hi, glad to hear that the problems are all sorted.
Can I ask, did Audi remove Component Protection for you and did they charge?. The log that you have posted shows CP active and I thought only Audi could remove that. I ask because I wanted to upgrade my Air circulating controller but I understand the unit is component protected.

Audi haven't touched it and we didn't remove the CP either. I have not read about any others who have had CP issues with Nav installs. From what I hear you need to speak to various Audi dealers in your area to find out willing to remove CP on an item but if I were you make sure your 100% sure it needs to be removed. I have fitted NAV and AMI without any CP issues.
