Hi folks.
Am sadly loosing my battle to save our trusty A6 [with 252000 on the clock -never broken down, love her to bits -but electrical ecu/Air mass ?problem :(]

Seen an A8 -always wanted to have one -for sale
Details are as follows.

Year -2000
3.7 engine
140k with full service history
LPG conversion.
New MOT

Everything working.

Would someone of you wise A8 folk put down the things one should look out for in these cars. The expensive bits that break, etc,
Because of the LPG conversion am seriously considering buying it.[Was looking at A4 1.9 Tdi just for the economy- but like big cars and the A8 has always been at the top of my list -except for it eating fuel!!]
I have absolutely no knowledge of LPG.:p
How well do LPG conversions work.Do they eventually knacker the engine?

I am a firm believer in the collective knowledge of owners and would value your input.

Thanks in advance

Hi Ray,

Re the LPG, I had one done in my previous car ( BMW 3.20 coupe) and I noticed a very slight drop in performance but not too bad. The other very slight annoyance is the fact that if it has a small tank you will need to refill more regularly but this is not really that bad as most stations now have LPG.

I would check to ensure that the conversion was carried out by an authorised person and that they pass on the certificate with the paperwork. Mine came with a five year warranty as well so worth asking if the seller when the conversion was done and any period of warranty still left.

In general My A8 has been very good and below is a list of things I had to do since I purchased in 2007:

1) mmi update with updated sat nav disc, done at Audi who after let's say a long debate agreed to meet half the cost, £350 in total and I paid 50%.

2) suspension light came on a month after I had it and that was a faulty rely switch, again fixed by Audi under warranty.

3) brakes and discs done with my first service came in at £800, done at local garage.

4) more recently I have just had to replace the front antiroll bar links just under £80 from euro car parts (lemforder brand as I was told they were worth paying the little extra for)! I replaced these my self

5) as a result of 4) above I now need to do the wheel alignment to ensure all continues to work well!

Other than the above I have serviced the car my self using high quality oil and parts annually and that cost around £120 in parts.

Oh I forgot to say also replaced all 4 tyres about a year ago and I have 20" rims so that was a shock to the wallet :0(

Let us know how you get on.

Check that the panels are all ok, because it's a specialist repair (due to aluminium body) and it'll cost an arm and a leg. Other than that, check that everything works- it changes gears smootly, no noises when cornering or braking, etc.

All Audis seem to go through lower arm ball joints. My old A6 used to need at least one on every service.
