guys i have a audi q7 not had it for long, i noticed a couple of drops of oil on the floor, so i located were it came from and its out the air intake pipe near were the maff sensor is that then goes into the intake manifolds... why would there be oil in there? whats the cause? i also have noticed the car smokes when pulling away all the time but then clears up... i know the guy when i bought it said he cleaned the intake manifolds with wd-40 or summit due to a problem with the intake manifolds being clogged up.. ? its only done 56k.

Hi daniel,

Did you sort out the problem with intake manifold motor yet, had my service at audi last week, and they noticed my intake manifold motor on bank 2 was not working, to my amazement they told me its always bank 2 that breaks down, makes you wonder how many of us who drive the 3.0 litre are going to have problems.
But i,m still not getting any problems with the car, its recently passed the MOT without any problems.
Also noted was the fact they told me it would be better to change the motor and manifold as one unit at a lot more expense, when i asked them to explain why, they said the breakdown was caused by the intake flap becoming stiff, overstraining the motor causing it to burn out.
Well i checked the flaps operation, and to be honest, its operation is perfect, in fact you need slightly less effort to operate it by hand than bank 1, audi could not offer an explanation to this.

hi. not yet mate, iam waiting for the motor to arrive in next couple of days... iam not changing the manifolds just getting them cleaned up ect. on bank 2 of my car the motor looks brand new but the manifold insnt. but on bank 1 the manifold is new but motor isnt.. so just before i bought my car the guy must of bought the complete unit for bank 1 put the manifold on there and put the motor on bank 2, strange.. i do have both fault codes coming up for both banks but all iam doing is changing the motor only for bank 1 and and having both manifolds looked at and cleaned up.. so doest your motor work at all? its mainly down to just the connector rod being worn not the motor burning out? some guys have got away with just modifying the rod so it can be ajusted to take the play out.

Daniel,

No my car shows no problems at all, bank 2 motor is definetly dead and doesn,t work at all, as stated earlier my car flew through its mot including the smoke/emissions test, my emissions light comes on occasionally, about 3 times in 100000 miles, still waiting for some senior member to post on wheather you can just change the motor without specialist tooling, its just 3 allan key screws to fit, but audi keep telling me its not as simple as that, they state you need a special tool to do the job, when i asked them to explain further, they don,t seem to know what they mean.

there is no tool thats needed mate, my mechanic who is doing mine and done many of these before and no special tool needed. audi just saying that so you go to them. the manifold has to come off to fit the motor so they may be saying that its not that simple because of that. i was going to fit the motor myself but no point as the guy who i bought the car off is paying the labour.

Hi again daniel, i don,t think the manifold needs to come off for a motor change, you simply pop of the linkage with a flat edge screwdriver and withdraw the motor after releasing its fixings, but i will double check when i get some more free time.
Incidently after my service with audi, i had a small wager with my wife....... that the emissions light would come on directly i took the car back from them, now i need you to bear in mind that i know theres a fault on the bank 2 manifold motor, but the emissions light only came on 3 times in 10000 miles, in fact its been months since i,ve seen it, and then a simple stop and start gets rid of it.
Anyway i won the bet, can you believe that.......
I re-scanned my car this morning and a fault shows on bank 1 motor, but after clearing the fault, it now seems to have settled, only problem seems to be readiness which doesn,t show all zero,s, i believe this is relevent to emissions.
I,ll let you make your mind up on the above, but i don,t believe a coincidence can be that smack on.
I won,t be going back to that perticular audi, the service didn,t go well from the time i went through the door, but thats another story.

the part turned up and it was the hole unit... dont no how he got it for £160+vat but anyway ive had this fitted to bank 1 and now the fault has gone but bank to is still showing faulty :( bank 2 has a new motor on but not new manifold so must need a new manifold... after doing more research i may have a go cutting the old rod of bank 1 and putting an ajuster on then fitting to bank 2 see if that works what the germans are doing as if my manifold has gone it must be due to the wear on the joint of the manifold were the rod connects to... does anyone have a link to the german forum were there cutting these rods?
