Are all garages generally averse to repairing tyres now, or is it just the Tyres-R-Quik sheds that think it's easier or more profitable to sell you a new one?

Popped out to the shops half an hour ago, as I revered off the driver the car was "reluctant" to move which I actually wondered if it was the same fault someone else reported here a week or two back, but as soon as I'd straightened up and pulled forwards the graunchy noise told me it it was worse than that ....

So I had an audience of all the local kids while I figured out how to get the jack out of its hole, which of the little tools removed the wheel nut covers and changed over to the space saver

I took a quick look and the tyre has a screw slap bang in the centre of the tread. looks fairly clean to me, what's the chances of a decent repair rather than an expensive replacement?

All sorted for £12, first time I've ever had a repairable puncture ...

as yours was in the centre of the tread, then they would have been able to
plug it, but it isn't always possible--anywhere near the side wall is a "no go".
we often think that repairers are just after our cash, but thankfully most are
thinking of the customer, and his/her safety when doing the job.
thinking about it, repairs are usually traceable through receipts, unless you are paying "cash",and so the repairer must always protect himself,
and who can argue with that?
pleased you got a reasonable repair,:biglaugh:

stewy.

Hi there SunnyBard, I see you are in Leicester.
Who have you found that will fix a puncture for £12? Would you believe I found a nail in both front tyres yesterday, neither loosing air and both nails centre tread but the people I usually use want £24 plus VAT each!

K. Tee Tyres in South Wigston, I've never bought tyres from them (cos they don't sell any I've ever heard of) but they're friendly, used them before just for fitting and balancing.

If that's not your side of town I'd try Jock's Tyres on Humberstone Road, very good prices on Contis there.

Thanks for the info, South Wigston is fine so I'll give them a call on Tuesday.

Just out of interest, do the garages re-balance the wheel after the puncture repair?

I wondered if they might try to economise on that by marking the tyre and wheel and refitting at the the same position, and I didn't wait around while they repaired it, but no, in my case the weights have been replaced, so it's been balanced properly, presumably a new valve too as they usually seem to cut the old one off regardless

Every repair I've ever had has always have a new valve and has been rebalanced. I wouldn't accept it any other way.
