i intend to fit an xcarlink mp3 adaptor in the glovebox of my 2006 plate a3 sportback.
am i right in thinking that by leaving the ignition switched off and turning the passenger air bag switch to off in the glove compartment that when everything is connected back up and switched on i shouldn't get any problems with the airbag warning light coming up on the dash
cheers

you should not have any problems by doing that
Unless you have a crash with a passenger in the front seat !
In which case your insurance company will dis-own you !!

I'm thinking of also fitting one of these as they sound like great gadgets. Did you simply take the glovebox out, drill a hole in the side for the cable (that's the bit I'd be a bit concerned about) and then loop the cable round to the back of the concert? Or did you find a better/neater way?
Thanks in advance for your advice. :)

i turned passenger airbag to off in the glove compartment as a precaution and my ignition was off throughout installation.
i removed all glove box studs then lowered the glove box slightly (i used a plastic bucket turned upside down with a towel on top to rest glovebox on and to protect the plastic being scratched)
this gave me access to the space behind to route cable to my head unit.
i drilled a small hole to pass the block connectors from xcar link unit through the hole. i have positioned mine in the top right corner of the glove box with velcro which works fine with no rattles.
remove headunit to make the connections to the xcarlink unit.
try not to disconnect the power cable to your head unit unless you have the radio code or if you know that the radio code for your head unit is stored within your cars ecu.
its a real simple installation just a bit fiddly.
try this link on the forum as well "How To" fit a XCarLink iPod to an Audi stereo (may work for other VAG? also in pictures!) (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=49125&highlight=xcarlink)
hope this helps you out.

That's great, thank you for the detailed help. I found instructions on removing the glove box here so I have that info now:

I'm thinking about the hole;
did you have any difficulty drilling the hole?
did you just use an ordinary steel drill bit?
Is it a big hole (due to the block connectors) and look unsightly? (I know it's in the glovebox :p)
This would be my first attempt at doing something like this on my car, so I'm a bit nervous about it!
Thanks!

hi alan
it really is a simple process. just take your time.
the hole is easily drilled with a hss drill bit. if you want to you could either file or smooth edges of a the hole with a dremel or something similar but you won't see the hole if you mount it how i did because the unit covers it and it is in the glove box anyway
good luck
