Ok so decided to check how long my longlife service had to go by pressing the "spanner button" and absolutely nothing is happening. Nothing is changing on the display.
It's been over 18,000 miles since last one and average mileage has been 19,000 between services so will be servicing it very soon anyway but just wondered if I'm doing something wrong with this button.
Any comments greatly appreciated.

Are you doing this before starting the engine and are you holding it down long enough?

Yup also doesnt do it when the car is moving
19k between is impressive even on my Audi which was 99.9% motorway only got 17, whereas the passat is doing 15-16k but mainly town

Thanks for the replies gents.
According to the book it should only need a brief press to show how many miles the car reckons it has left till the next service.
Sorry maybe I didn't make it clear that I'm not trying to reset it just interested to see the service mileage remaining.
Did try it with engine off with ignition on and with engine running but the button just doesn't seem to operate at all.
Thanks again
Chris

The way to get it to display is:
Sit in drivers seat with seatbelt on.
Make sure drivers door is closed.
Put the key in and push key until the dashboard light up just before the engine starts. (Do not have the engine running)
Press and hold the spanner button until the display changes to show miles till next service.

How do you reset it? I've just had my car serviced and MOT'd, but I'd like to bet that the service indicator won't have been reset (not complaining given how cheap I got the work done for).

Absolutely spot on mate! Many thanks indeed for that. According to my motor the service is due in 1000 miles but will do it before then. :)

Mine counts down from 1,300 miles every time I turn the ignition on - I thought they all did that.
