Firstly, sorry for the thread title... not sure what happened there!
Due to an ongoing problem of FM reception due to some broken aerial connectors, VW have advised that they would change the whole antenna loom, as any fixing or soldering could impact on the reception.
Not wanting to pay VW prices I have found the same part number on ebay, but a different export code. My current loom is 3C5-971-650-EN, and I've found 3C5-971-650-KQ.
A link is attached of the item I have taken a chance on - as the part number is the same, I'm guessing that the extra two connectors (including the maroon colour) are for the GSM fin. All I've got this replacement item for is an unbroken link between the radio and the rear window aerial. As an early model, I think mine is a simple two wire system - no gsm or anything like that...

Is my thinking correct, in that I can discard the maroon connectors, and just plug in the radio fakras and the aerial ones too? That's what I'm hoping... it'll be a bit of a job rerouting through the whole of the car, but worth it for the proper reception.
