as a newbie i'd first like to say hello to everyone. then beg for advice. my car has decided to dump most of the oil into the cooling system, no sign of water/oil mix in the engine itself but lots of muck in the expantion tank. it's been suggested the oil cooler may be the culprit and i'm praying it's not a head gasket, any advise please?

It definately sounds like an oil cooler failure.Quite an easy fix, replace it,the fun starts when you try to clean the cooling system,it took me ages to get the water clear, just keep changing it,running it,changing it,running it,and buy a new expansion tank when it's clear, the old one will never be clean.Rod.

I heard that a handful of washing powder dissolved in hot water and poured into the expansion tank when your cleaning it will lift the oil. I assume you need to get the car to operating temperature for it to work. Oil cooler is an easy enough repair.
