I have recently become the proud owner of a 2.0 TDI S Line 170 manual. I get 33mpg around town and 43mpg on the motorway at around 85. Is that fuel consumption about right or a bit on the low side?

That sounds about right. that's pretty much what mine shows on the DIS, but when I work it out myself, it's usually actually about 2.5 mpg more than the dis.

A hell of a lot better than my 21mpg!

Yup, the more I surf around this forum the more it confirms that this sort of mpg is fairly typical for the 170. Well, if the fuel consumption puts a frown on my face, the acceleration puts a huge grin on it - oh yes!

Actually it does seem a little low. A friend of mine has the A5 3.0TDI and he gets around 30mpg in town and 40mpg motorway (according to the DIS).

My DIS shows similar numbers (2.0T Q Sline with remap) but in real life it's a couple of mpg high.
Last 3 tanks of fuel have been 26, 27 and 28mpg on same commute every day. I assume the climbing mpg is down to increasing outside temperatures and not the fact that I've stopped using super unleaded:confused:

Woo Hoo. Just done a fill up and got 59 litres into it. I'd done 530 miles. That works out at 40.8 mpg. Finally broke the 40 threshold with around town driving. Some of this has been quite enthusiastic as well. It's amazing what effect having your EGR cleaned out can make! I've now got the performance that I would expect from a 170, and decent economy! All for the pricely sum of £67.20

Cancel, cancel. My wife's just told me she stuck a tenner's worth of diesel in it on Monday. Bloody 'ell. I'd got all excited then. It actually works out at 36.4mpg so I suppose it's not too bad. Still loving the performance now the EGR valve is shutting when it should though.

Recently had my tdi 170 and had a look in the memory of the DIS.
Previous owner had not cleared it in the last 6000 odd miles and in that time it had averaged 38.2 mpg. So I'd say your figures look about right.
Good news is your car seems to be functioning as it should.
Bad news is your car seems to be functioning as it should.

600 mile round trip with mostly 80mph+ motorway driving and about 15% country lanes averaged at about 44mpg

Family day out today, 60 mile round trip.
About 75% was A roads but quite a mix of driving.
Up and down the box a fair bit, getting stuck behind tractors, waiting impatiently behind the 40mph squad on the national speed roads before a quick blast past, roadworks etc etc.
All in all it worked out at 45mpg according to the DIS.

Hi all
On my euro road trip, of dual carrige ways and motorways, doing about 75 to 80, with me and the MRS, Dog and the back seat full of stuff, the DIS gave me on average 50 to 54 MPG.
Not bad but i reckon I would get more from her non quattro as it is lighter.

Hi
Sorry to throw a spanner in the works : )
MY 2.0 Tdi (140) now remapped to 170 BHP averages around 54 mpg per tank. Mixture of town and mainly motorway driving.

180 miles today 90% motorway 10% country. Returned 47.2mpg. That is a first for me. I was driving at 70mph on the motorway though. Coil light came on and conked again on motorway but restarted. 1000 miles since last conked out because of coil light. Either that is one hard nut of a injector or wiring loom on its way out!! BTW i have a 170

Ive done approx 66k in a 2007 170 s line . Recently Ive been driving like a girly lightweight and I can get 45 on the motorway trip from London to Cheshire sitting at about 70 ish
Mixed driving but very light footed gets about 40 and town driving is about 34 .
Have now ordered a new TDIe in an attempt to get over 50 on a regular basis not just occasionally when free wheeling down a Welsh hill
