Used to use a halfords rear bike rack on my galaxy but I see that the avant only has one hook under the car to attach the rack to.
Any recommodations on best way to carry bikes on the avant - roof mounted or rear carrier?
Which makes?

By far and above the best way to carry bikes IMO is a towbar mounted carrier although you need to justify the cost of getting the towbar fitted and then the cost of the carrier, so really worthwhile if you take lots of bike trips. They can carry 4 bikes and you don't have to worry about height restrictors in car parks.

This is my set-up

However on the Avant I originally had (and still have) the roof mounted system which are a doddle to fit on the roof rails and fairly inexpensive.

Not a great fan of the boot mounted carriers as you mentioned securing the bikes can sometimes be troublesome and you may still need a numberplate/light board

Take a look at this one as well, bought last year from pf jones, used extensively in france and britain,
be carefull if driving in europe especially france if your bikes cover your lights, you get an on the spot fine, the beauty of this one and thule are the lights are built into the unit, towbar required though.

EDIT, forgot to mention, this one folds up and can be put in the boot for sercurity when out biking, it also locks to the towbar for further added sercurity.

If you dont have a tow bar (which can get expensive). I'd recommend the Thule Pro Rider a roof bar mounted carrier.

Rock solid and 5 mins to fit.
