In order to avoid anybody saying (not without some justification) 'why don't you take it off and measure it', let me explain.

The rubber part of the aerial mast on my allroad is perished to buggery and I need a new one. The threaded stub is very tight in the base, and I think I'm likely to ruin the mast completely in trying to get it off.

This means I won't be able to listen to Ken Bruce on the wireless until I get another, and that's a scenario I simply can't countenance.

Thing is I don't know whether I need a 5mm thread or a 6mm one. Even the quite extraordinarily helpful bloke in the dealership doesn't know which I'll need without taking the old one off first.

It's an 04 allroad without satnav.

I think I need a 5mm thread.

Am I right?

Sorry, can't give you an answer but if the dealer doesn't have both in stock couldn't they get both in for you and return the wrong one?

I see where you're coming from! Can't the dealer get you part number from your chassis number? My dealer insists on the chassis number before they'll give a price for anything!

We tried the chassis number trick, but to no avail. The parts bloke is a diamond. He only wanted to make sure I got the right one, bless him.

If you're as tight as me then you will wrap duck tape around the perished rubber bit.

Once it's on you should be able to unscrew without damaging anything, or just think "That'll do for a while" and leave it like that without paying a penny.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but have you still got the ridiculous perm you had when you did 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing'?

How about a "permanent" solution of a bit of black heat-shrink tubing over it.

If it's good enough for -55 to +125 digrees, it'll certainly be ok for the car.

Shoulkd be almost as neat as the real thing, if you're careful.
