View Full Version : Turbo fault code

Hi,
As some of you may have read in a couple of other threads recently, I had an issue with my car both driving to and from Ireland this weekend.
Under light accelertion the glow plug light started flashing so I instantly thought it was the injector issue. Difference being that the car didn't cut out, but went into limp mode instead. Turned it off, then back on and all fine for 389 miles until it happened again. This time I happened to be overtaking on a slight hill. Managed to dart into a conveniently placed layby. Again, turned it off, then back on again, and off we went. The cruise control stopped working until it was again restarted at the next services.
Both times it happened were under similar circumstances. Light acceleration on an incline.
It was in for a service today anyway, so I had the fault code read, and it was as follows:

00665 Boost pressure regulation control range not reached. P0299 Short with power intermittent.

My question is whether this is likely to be the turbo itself, or some turbo ancillary part such as the actuator. Don't really know where to start with it as obviously don't really want to fork out for a new turbo if it could be something minor. Turbo sounds like it's spooling up fine by the way.

Thanks in advance

MMM

The " Short with power " part of the code was steer me in the direction that it is something electrical rather than mechanical but I could be wrong. Have you RossTech the fault ?

Here it is if you have not :

Cheers for the reply A4 LAD. It crossed my mind about something electrical, but I just don't know.
Not used Ross-tech. My indy guy didn't use VCDS to read the code, but some fancy Snap-ON machine that he has.
As a side issue, reason for the trip was a wedding in your neck of the woods (Merchant Hotel) by the way.
Cheers Mate

Brilliant mate.
I had no idea that that even existed as a website.

Thanks again

The Merchant.... Very nice indeed, they must like to splash the cash ? The wife was going to surprise me for my 30th and book a nice room for the night but it was working out over £250 a night !
No problem about the link, I feel for ya, these faults are a nightmare.
He probably used the Snap On Modus or Solus, they are very good.

Now totally off topic, but all I can say is that it is the most gorgeous hotel I've ever stayed in. We've said we'll stop there on our own when kids are old enough to be left one time we're over (wife from Dungannon). You must treat yourself sometime! :D
Thanks again for youe AUDI related help!:biglaugh:

As the ross-tech site sais that code is often caused by either a split hose or a faulty valve. Both fault I have seen mention on this forum before. Nothing particularly complex or expensive to fix.

I maybe will but its only 10 miles up the road so cant really make it a nice relaxing break :)
No problem about the Audi help :)

Anyone know where the charge pressure control is? I can't see it being a split or loose pipe as it would do it all the time wouldn't it? It's only happened twice so far.

Quick update:
The car has done the same thing a further 3 times. Funnily enough, two of those times were in exactly the same place on exactly the same slip road.
Anyway, it was in the garage (indy) for investigation on Thursday. He tested the boost pressure switch and all the values were spot on, so he smoke tested the vacuum system which was all perfect, and also the hot side of the turbo system. With the pipe that goes from the EGR valve to the inlet manifold disconnected, smoke was getting past the EGR. He took it apart and it was quite sooted up, so he took it off and soaked it overnight in a special cleaner.
The way he explained it is that if exhaust gases get past the EGR when they shouldn't, it is possible that you could get the scenario where the turbo can momentarily lose pressure, thus generating the fault code and going into limp mode. This would explain why once the ignition is turned off and then back on again, it runs perfectly.
I got it back yesterday, and although there is no guarantee that this will fix my fault, it feels very very quick indeed compared to how it always has in the past. (I've had it 6 months) This alone is worth the £67.20 that he charged me for doing the job!! :biglaugh:

Cheers

Hello,

Did this fix your problem? I'm having a similar issue with power loss on the motorway.
