View Full Version : Please Help Help from a Haynes Manual?......

I've been pretty careless when changing the headunit various times in the past year, so much so that now I have a disconnected 'L' shaped connector.

I'm heading off the dealer tomorrow (as I figured out they would probably know best when it comes to audio/non mechanical work)...

If anyone can help who has a haynes manual, could you tell me what parts the antenna is made up of? There is the antenna unit in the rear screen, and the two connectors you see behind the stereo fascia. What happens inbetween?

All I'm thinking is what VW will be able to do to help me? Ideally I want them to put two brand new fakra connectors on, however I'm also preparing for the 'will have to replace the whole part' scenario.

As a worst case scenario, I've also ordered a female to female fakra adapter. A local audio shop has said that they will be able to join wires by solder and heatshrink...

Thanks for any help you can give...

just had look through the haynes manual and theres no wiring diagram for the radio and very little other info regarding the radio/nav setup only just tells you how to get it out , but i guess you know that by now

Thanks for looking yesterday.

Think I should rename the thread 'Help: I need new antenna connectors'!

I was just trying to second-guess what VW can supply. Ideally I just want them to fit connectors so it can be just as it was before, only a few centimetres shorter.

I was also curious as to whether the antenna lead was one long 5 or so metre lead that went from the head unit, to the antenna in the rear...

Can't remember exactly how it's connected to the cables so I looked on the photos from my last radio out job but without much success. It's about the only part I didn't photo.

From previous experience with something similar, you might be able to get it re-crimped by a really good in-car audio specialist or else they can splice/extend cables using miniature RF connectors.

Failing that, you might be able to find something to fix it at CPC but ideally use the catalogue because the website is pants. Or else, try RS. They are expensive but carry all sorts of useful stuff and you don't need an account if you live near one of the trade counters.

How about get a set from a scrapper and splice together?

I'll get quotes for various options tomorrow. I've heard that possibly the antenna wires are split in 2 - a shorter section from the head unit to just below the gear knob, and the second a longer section from there to the amplifier.

My preferred option is definitely to get the proper replacement cables and either have them fitted by the dealer, regardless of cost, or to get them spliced and soldered by a local car audio company.

Does anyone know whether I'll risk reduced reception/interference by attempting a splice into one of the many antenna adapters on ebay? (same fakra connection but a slightly thinner cable)

Thanks for all the help this far..

Dealer has ordered in two aerial coaxial leads with plugs, only around 30cm in length so these must be the first section from the stereo to somewhere behind the dash.

Intend to either fit these as replacement parts or splice together with my existing cables.

£16 each so could have been worse...
