If I remember correctly there was a recall on the steering column and the control unit. Im not 100% as the master tech at our garage used to do them all. but he changed hundreds for faults like what you are having.

It may be worth ringing your local dealer and ask about it because we had loads of problems with them when they first came out.

Only a dealer can recode the new lock to the car. How did you mechanic manage that bit ?

Just had mine done and as Martin says it's dealer only for this. Cost me £375 fitted, used to be a case of changing the whole column till VeeDub brought out a repair kit for it. Expensive, but better than paying a grand for a new column

Would imagine you would need VCDS to wing the motors in

Someone said on here recently that the steering was the subject of a recall in the States only.

Strikes me as a bit of an 'up yours' to the Brits. Wonder where else it was a recall?

If the rear brakes are stuck on...Take off the motor and wind the piston pusher back a few turns with a torx bit. Then put motor back. Don't use epb after this as it will need resetting.

why the recall is only in the States?

why the recall is only in the States?

There was definitly a recall or campain in the UK. It may have been a campian which ment customers were not informed about it and it only got checked when a car came into the workshop. Every passat that we brought in had to have the part number checked and it was something like if it had a certain number it had to be changed But I am not 100% sure what it was because our master tech did them all.

I will have a look through my paper work and see if i can find the info for it.

I believe owners in the States were notified by letter.

I have been on to the master tech I used to work with. It was a recall when the 3C passat first came out because the imobillizer that was fitted could not be addapted and when the column or lock went faulty you could not code a new one in. only certain part numbers were affected and every thing got changed (steering lock, column and control unit)

It was only a recall for a VERY short time then it became what we called a TPI meaning it only got changed if the customer had a problem.

Most affected cars will have been changed a long time ago.

However he says they are still suffering form column and lock problems but there is now a repair kit and a updated software download.

hope this is a help.

And they said there was no recall on the passat for this problem and that they could not talk to me about a t.p.i . I think they have me every way i turn . ........1 dealer quoted me £ 174 +vat over the phone and another £750 +vat. it does'nt make sense.

The recall wont excist anymore because it went to a TPI.

Edited as my comments where not relevant to issue.

The service advisors at dealers are useless and have not got a clue about anything technical.
They probably dont even know what a TPI is because only techs have access to them.

All they will care about is getting your cash, thats why I left the dealers I was sick of being told to rip people off by some kid that hadnt even worked in a workshop.

considering you're an ex dealer techincian of 10 years experience, one can but wonder if there are sour grapes on your behalf.

furthermore, if such fraud existed in the dealership it's bemusing that it took you 10 years to get 'sick' of such practices.

Mind how you talk about dealerships please.

I will be honest with you there are sour grapes because I was pushed out of a place I enjoyed working and was proud to be part of by a new manager because I didnt agree with what he wanted to do to hit targets.

I apologize for being negative about them and I have edited my comment.

Do you work in a dealer?

Where I work is unimportant and rarely, if at all mentioned for reasons I cannot go into.
