Hi all,
I have owned a 2006 A4 1.9 TDI 115 bph 5 speed manual for the last 4 years and I am now an Audi driver for life. I bought the car as a demo with 3k and now after four years I have 90k miles on the clock. Even though this car has never once let me down, now I feel its time to upgrade.
There are quite a few 2010 A4 Avants 143 bph SE with Multitronic available in the UK at the moment for quite good value. I have always wanted an auto, but afraid to take the leap from conventional manual. What are they like to live with? Is there a big difference on fuel economy? Also, more importantly how reliable are the new multitronic boxes after, say 80k? I intend to keep my next A4 for four or five years. Are the 2010 Audi Multitronic boxes good for 5 years 100k miles? If not, how much would it cost to change or repair when the car is out of warranty?

Thanks for all replys..

Barry

Theres a recent thread on this topic mate if you look back a bit, several people all agreed, with various amounts of miles, that although the early ones had problems they are all sorted now and you can expect to get 100k trouble free. As long as well maintained ofc.

Personally i wouldn't go back from auto/cvt now unless given the chance to spend more time on twistys, even then id probably like to try the s-tronic or something. Only 9.5k on mine but no probs and smooth as you like.

Im no mechanic or Audi employee though and its my first muti box so not the most experienced reply!

Don't know how much I can help but I picked up my 1.8T multitronic on Saturday. Always had manuals before and its actually pretty good. I only got it as I do a lot of town driving and I don't regret it at all. I looked into it before buying and the new multitronics seem to be pretty reliable. I haven't really tried out Sport mode or the manual shifts but in Drive it puts the power down well and is well worth it.

If you go for a test drive make sure that you are actually driving a multitronic. I asked for a test drive and because the salesman is a complete tool (got my car order wrong on several counts and can't read the brochure) he got me a 2.0T with the tiptronic to try. They are different to drive so make sure you get the right one.

I made a similar decision last November. I swapped my 2.0 diesel Passat (2008 common rail) manual for an A4 2.0 143 Multitronic with 8k on the clock registered in March 2010.
It makes an interesting comparison as essentially the cars have the same engine but the Passat was manual and the A4 multitronic.
Regarding fuel consumption I measure this accurately (not on the fuel computer) and over 61k miles the Passat averaged 47.5 mpg. I've now done 6k in the A4 and the average figure is 44.3 mpg which I find quite acceptable. However almost all my mileage is long distance, mainly on motorways at 75 - 80 mph. I reckon driving only around town the consumption would not better low 30s mpg.
I understand that the old 7 plate clutch in the multitronic was a real weakness, but this has now been resolved with an 8 plate clutch.
For me the only negative on the car was that it did not have cruise control as standard and I had to get this retrofitted.
The smooth gentle power delivery of the multitronic box is fabulous - and if you stick it in Sport it's a right laugh!
For 2 cars essentially made from the same parts I have to say the Audi feels far superior in quality to the VW. I suffered 60k miles of squeaks, rattles and tyre noise in the Passat which are entirely absent in the A4. So far I'm a satisfied customer!

Welcome redbarry, that looks like your first post.

Lived with mine now since Oct '09 and can only say ... its great.
Power is fine for me (45yo) and the paddles as I said on many a post are just so much fun.

Have a search on here and you will see nothing but BIG PLUS's.

I have just lived with a manual for the past couple of days whilst mine is in at the dealers and economy wise it is better on a run but round town I think it is no better than a multi.
