Don't quote me on this but I think the ccu has to be coded as the steering lock communicates to it which is a dealer only job.....could be wrong though !

richball65 is correct. You can't DIY change a ccm in a B6 passat. It is part of the imobiliser system.

thanks fellas, there's not much point of buying one off flesabay then, can't see dealer programming one I brought in myself! better start saving up then, why couldn't they just put a bloody keyhole in the back door!

Steve, I 've recently had problems with mine revolving around the imobbilser and ccm, was quoted around £400 for a new ccm
Might be wrong but don't see why the dealer could not code the one you supply !
How did your sparkie com to the conclusion it was the ccm?

Did the autoelectrician provide a diagnostic read out. You need to be careful with autoelectricians. Some think can-bus cars are just like any other car and diagnose faults accordingly.

As Martins says, might be best getting it checked by an indy VW garage who has the correct equipment to fault find.
If it does turn out to be the ccm, check this out

thanks for the replies, not sure exactly what he did as I wasn't there but think he somehow by passed part of the unit but could then tell the door to unlock which it did bringing him to this conclusion, my mechanic was with him and he seemed to understand what he'd done, he did say if I can get one he may be able to reprogramme it, wasn't 100% on that but thought he could
Where exactly is the unit situated in the car? have found a couple on well known auction site but obviously don't want to buy the wrong one
cheers chaps

If your car is a B6 I still don't think it can be done.

Replacing the control unit can only be done on-line with the factory

Have to totally agree with Martin, you could buy one off EBay but would deffo have to get it coded by your dealer.
Phone your dealer with you reg or vin number, get the part number off them then have a surf on eBay for one

Just get a proper code scan done by a dealer or someone with VCDS. VCDS can pinpoint this type of fault faster than an autoelectrician.

well chaps got hold of sparks with VCDS and he pinpointed the handle switch which he said is a common fault on vws especially tourans and passats so gonna get one in the morning, you'd think the dealer technician I spoke with would have had an idea but there all bloody useless - not mechanics anymore just parts swoppers
wish me luck
