Golf 1.6 SE tickover issues

Can anyone offer any guidance please? Tickover was a bit lumpy when I acquired the car and also I felt an odd sensation through the accelerator pedal quite similar to the sensation when ABS kicks in. Kept stalling in traffic. Garage have, I think, just racked up the idle speed rather than fixing properly, Any suggestions based on similar experience?

I dont think 'racking up' the idle speed is possible on these motors are they? Do you know the engine model? and what are the revs sitting at idle when it gets going? 1500 or so?

The usual culprit is a coil or distrubutor issue, but you really need to get the car fault scanned for a more accurate diagnosis
