Anyone any idea how much a caliper is?

had the brake warning light on and changed the switch on the dash as the most obvious fault however the brakes are still staying on, phoned a chap who has VAGcom and he says it is more then likely it will be a caliper but will need to test it first, which will be tomorrow afternoon.

Trying to prepare myself for a heavy bill.

Different matter on a B6 with its Electronic handbrake. I beleive you need VCDS to wind the motors back in just to change the pads !

Unfortunately the B6 has the electric motor attached, found recons for £200 + old caliper should it come to it.

I will update tomorrow if it is the caliper and VW cost.

They are £500 each side from the dealer . You can just buy the motor. Around £30-£40 from the dealer.

I would be waiting to see if there are any faults held which will show up on VCDS, it may be that 'testing' the rear brakes with VCDS will show 'if' its the parking brake or not.

On point, changing anything brake related on the rears will need VCDS. Good luck with it..

As Rappy says, don't expect much change out of £500 if you get a VW dealer to replace it.

I should know, since both mine have been replaced. :zx11:

The motor went on one, the other had a crack.

Of course, they could be repaired at significantly less cost, but you or the mechanic need to know exactly what they're doing.

Well four fault codes showing up for the left rear brake. No replacements in the country, everything on back oredr according to VW.

I'm off next Monday so with nothing to lose I will strip the motor/ caliper as necessary and see if I can get some life back in to it as per Martins write up.:beerchug:

My mechanic had said he replaced the rear motor on an Audi A6. Not to sure but I think he said they are the same as the Passats. Hence I found out about being able to just change the motors if needed. Not replacing the whole caliper.

Your right about being able to change just the motor but they are on back order as well so nothing to lose by trying to repair, as a thought does anyone know if the Passat brakes are the same as the Audi, might get a motor from Audi if they are?

As the VAG group share the same parts. I would say so. Also I would imagine the have the same part numbers. I would call an Audi/VW dealer and ask.

Took the motor off today and noticed it had cracked allowing water in and the gears to sieze.

Caliper itself is fine, but tried to free the gears and manged to put a crack in it so now need to wait for them coming into the country or try and source a second hand one, problem being the scrap dealers that have responded so far want to sell me a caliper as well as the motor
