Hi all
looking at buying a newish A4 avant (2010 model) and quite fancy an auto. However the box within budget is the multitronic as opposed to the S- tronic. I understand the old multitronic boxes gave slot of issues but have the new ones been improved?? Would love to hear of reviews and experiences either way.
Thanks

I've had two multitronic A4s, a B6 and a B8, and can honestly say I've never had any gearbox issues.

Had mine (2.7 SE) for 11 months now. No problems at all. Have a drive in one - It's brilliant - ticks all the boxes for me.
I owned a B7 (2.0TDI) for just over 2 years and sold with 51K on the clock. No problems at all with the multitronic. Now got a B8 (2.7 V6 TDI) with the multi box again and so far (2weeks :p) no probs.
Like said above it is a beautiful box. So smooth and can give a good punch when you want to get somewhere sharpish.

I've got a 58 plate with 47,000 miles on the clock and still really smooth and doing what it is supposed to.

had a b8 se multi since new (may 08) - and now done 36000 - absolutely no problems whatsoever. go for it. !!!!!!
Took mine for its first service today, went for a drive with a mechanic and he said the CVT box is now trouble free. I said can I expect to get 100,000 miles out of it and he said yes..... but dont miss any oil changes ;)

Had one on my 58 plate. Had to be replaced under warranty at 18,000 miles. Was never quite right from day 1 so I guess my personal experience was the exception. That said, I agree with the other comments, it was quite excellent (when it worked).

Drive one and I am sure you will love it.
I do not think I would go back to a manual and the flappy paddles and 8 forward ratio's just makes you smile.
Given the speed and the number of gear shifts you always find it in the power (er hum, as much as you can expect from the devils fuel).

9 months with mine and love it - nice to hear a mechanics view.

Thanks all - has definitely reassured me. One further thing for all the 140ps drivers with the multitronic, do you feel the car to be underpowered in any way (not that I'm a boy racer but 0-60 figures aren't class leading etc)? My other option would be to look at the 2.7 though would prefer not to for higher costs. I did initially want quattro as well but I think I am prioritising an auto over this!
thanks again

Everyday it is fine and with multi you all ways have the Power on tap.
Having said this the other car in the garage is a 230ps Ed30 GTI and after using that for a weekend it feel like driving in treacle, bu the golf is a serious quick car.
Would I go for a bigger engine next time ..... In today's choked roads, no, although I do not dispute the 2.7 is a great car.

amar/nrw - well the shove is not quite the same as my previous accord 2.2 diesel manual and that had approx same bhp but to be honest if you boot it or switch into sport it can certainly build up the speed nicely in a sort ofcontrolled fashion.
Mind you i am not young and for me it is certainly ample shove.
I have not tried the 2.0 tdo 170 ps - that would be interesting to try.
Good Luck
