View Full Version : noisy 2.0 sport?
Hey all, new to the fourm. Brought a 2001 (Y) a4 2.0 sport about 2 weeks ago and my audi ownership is not going so well :(
its done 98,000 miles and i love it to bits. But........recently its started to sound like a diesel when i start her up and at idle, its fine when i drive around and no loss in power at all. but its making me worry about a big engine bill :(
Thing was though it never did this when i brought it, got it serviced (filters and oil) and cambelt change (very reliable mechanic) about a week after this the noise began. my mechanic had a quick look and double checked all his work (which is all fine) but even he's not sure what it could be without taking bits off.
any ideas?
Also my battery died this morning even though i drove around yesterday, battery is not old and alternator is fine?

It'll need plugging into Vag-Com to check whats going on, saves an expensive trip to Audi! Where are you based as presume after only 2 weeks of ownership you havent yet bought Vag-Com yourself?

i have the same engine and mine is not nosies with more miles..
What type of nosie is it??
Could it be a coil pack playing up? casuing a slight misfire with is making it run lumpy... that what i would think it could be..
Get it onto VAG-COm and check ther codes..

the noise is hard to define, like i said it sounds really lumpy just like a diesel does lol. one of the belt tensioners (i think it is) rattles and moves a lot but someone told me its for the power steering and that its normal. (i'll try and get a vid with sound so you can all hear and see).
But surly if a coil pack or something like that went it would throw an ecu light on??? none on at the moment!?
Where can i get a lead for vag-com from apart from ebay?
or if anyone is near richmond in surrey i'll give you some money to do a check for me :)
thanks for all the help so far people

Should run really smoothly and hardly move at all.
One of the ancillaries driven by that belt is on the way out.
Untension the belt and check each one for smooth rotation.
While the belt is untensioned run the engine and check that it is quiet.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, but not only was it noisy, the whole car was vibrating like an old tractor, i only bought the car in march (2001 A4 2.0 se), so i took it straight back to the dealers who informed me that it was the coil pack, it actually went as i was about to start a 300 mile journey, once i took it back it took them about 45 minutes to do, but as it was under warranty i couldn't tell you what it would cost to replace.
thanks for all the help guys, the cars going in tomorrow to get the ecu checked for fault codes etc and coil pack checked. fingers crossed it comes back running smoothly again :nervous:

as i said above,, it will be a misfire i would of thought due to a faulty coil pack..

Just an update y'all
Well i got it back today, after a lot of head rubbing and biscuit eating it was the camshaft sensor that was on the way out. car feels a lot smoother and quieter now :D
