Its my birthday today, and one of my presents from my dear old mum was a Wiki FM transmitter to let me use my iPod in the car (mainly as I haven't got round to sorting out the Connects2 stuff to do it properly :Blush2:) - anyway, it doesn't appear to like my car.

Mum tells me that she has one in her car, and its the greatest thing ever, yet in mine the sound can only be described as awful (not that I have the heart to tell mum that!) - Its almost as though the car stereo is continually trying to fine tune to the signal, which causes the sound to come and go, and at times contain a lot of interference.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it just a simple case that some car stereos don't work well with these? Or is it a poor effort that ultimately is destined for the back of a drawer somewhere (whilst all the time pretending to mum that its the best thing since sliced bread)?

My experience with these transmitters is unfortunately not good either - you have a selection of preset frequencies to use, and it all depends on how clear that range of frequency is in the area you are in (if you understand!)

So, for example my scenario: On a commute from York to Leeds, none of the preset frequencies stayed clear throughout my journey - local radio stations and other pirate stations (which seem to get picked up more with a transmitter) interfere continuously with reception, and unless you're stationary, the best thing to do is get it hard wired in to your stereo.

To echo the previous poster, these things are very hit and miss with the emphasis on miss

You'll spend so much time fiddling around with it you won't listen to the music

Hardwiring is the only decent option

Thanks guys - I'll consign it to the back of a drawer then, and practice my 'dead chuffed' voice :D

Just use the usual "Mum, really you shouldn't have"

But then follow it up with "No, you don't understand - you REALLY shouldn't have"

tried to get three different ones working in three different cars for three different people.

Same result:- Load of crap.

The first box I ticked when ordering the Passat was the MDI. There are cheaper aftermrket solutions though.

...and then pop it on fleabay!

Postage cost would probably out value it! :D :D

Ah well, the other present was much more useful (a nice cam-belt sized cheque ;))
