Love my car but getting p***ed off with it going wrong every other week.
Got the steering lock fault on the Mfd today, presume it's the micro switch on the column, but has anyone heard of a dud battery causing this fault?
Btw did have an MFD3 fitted yesterday with an updated canbus
Cheers

A low voltage often causes this error, without a fault being present.

Thought so Martin, makes me wonder if the chaps who installed that MFD3 put the correct canbus in and the battery drain fault is kicking in.
Seems a strange coincidence that it's started doing this the day after the install !!

Update !!!
The fiscon Bluetooth unit I had installed gives you some more info on the mfd including battery voltage which is at 11.9 without the engine running. Does this sound about right?
The thing that does point it towards a faulty steering lock is that I don't hear that familiar click as I put the key in and when I take it out !!

If it really is 11.9v, the battery is flat. You want over 12.5v on a battery.

Had it checked out at Awesome Gti today......steering lock up the spout, battery fine. Booked it with dealer on Thursday. £325.....better than a new column I suppose !!

the link is for VW USA !!!!
So a call to VWUK services would be in order :beerchug:
Try quoting the usa website, as i think all b6's were built in Germany !

It's in the dealer now, I asked them to basically sort the message that is coming up on the mfd.
They have fitted the new steering lock and it's not cured the problem, but still want to charge me for it. They say the imobiliser is not communicating with the convenience control module. New control module needed or so they say
Steering lock and control module comes to just over £800
This is getting beyond a joke now !!!!

My b6 sports was only 3.5 years old and 36k ended up paying £270 and got a new key too

I spoke to the mechanic, sorry technician who is doing my car, he said he " thought " it was the convenience control module. Surely he must have a fault code telling him it's that.
Getting on the phone to them, don't want them changing parts and hoping it will cure it
It's got my mad up today this :zx11:

I can see why :(. Its does not give you much confidence. Hopefully Martin will be along with some great advise :approve:. Is this a main dealer?
Also reading your previous post. It would appear to me that they should pay for the repair.

Indeed it is Rappy, just spoken to the tech again and he said it comes up with a fault code of 02840...... Can't see this code on Martins site
Think I'll get on the phone to VW customer services now, I've paid out over £3k recently because of faults with this car
Now I'm stuck without a car so can't go to work tomorrow
Pub I reckon !!

Good old injectors, injector harness, glow plugs, rear tyres cos of the sawtooth problem....should i go on or du think I should give it a Viking funeral??
Thing is, its a great car to drive and looks well, just seem to spend more time at the garage then actually driving it

Mmmmmm. Its a hard question. Mine has had zero problems in over 12 mths ownership. No car is problem free. By the sounds of it yours has had the common faults sorted so may be its worth keeping. I agree they are a great car to drive and not a
bad looking car.
What spec/year is yours?
Mine is a 55 plate 2.0 tdi 140 pd Sport with loads of extras. Just covered over 70k. and 15k of trouble free motoring.
Mine will be up for sale this year :D

Wake-Up Line from Central Convenience Module
Looks like CCM fault or faulty wiring. I doubt they can isolate a can-bus fault. :(

Well then, problem solved. The chaps who installed my RNS510 upgraded the CAN gateway but for some reason installed a gateway from a Golf.
This would not communicate with the convienience control module and so the imobiliser was not working.
This brought up a steering column lock error message on the dash.
My dealer refitted my old gateway this morning, coded it and all seems well.
Just need to keep my eye open for battery drain wusing my old CAN
Fingers, toes, elbows, knees and everything else crossed !!

Pleased to hear you got it sorted :approve::approve:.
So there was nothing wrong with the car just the gateway? Also what have you changed from and to?
Rappy.
richball65
25-02-2011, 03:43 PM
No, nothing wrong with it. The blokes who installed my RNS510 decided to install a CAN from a golf which basically disabled the immobiliser.
Old gateway back on and all is well
Still had to pay for a new steering lock that the dealer fitted though !!!

:aargh4::aargh4::aargh4: that sounds bad mate :(:(.
Who fitted the new rns510? and installed an incorrect canbus?
Who diognosed the steering column was faulty?
I would be very keen to speak to both of these people and explain your troubles and being out of pocket:mad::mad: Its not your fault when all said and done. But may be thats just me :Blush2:

Whats the new unit like? Is it Dynaudio compatible? I was considering upgrading mine. But with selling the car this year there seems little point.
There has been lots of issues on here with battery drain hope you dont get them.

It was a company called OEM Retrofits who installed the wrong CAN, sent an email to them but had no reply and no reply when calling.
VW said the steering lock was faulty as that was coming up on the MFD but no faults showing on VAGCOM. The only way to check if it was faulty would be to refit the old lock, but I reckon it was deffo the CAN as it was disabling the immobiliser.
The unit is cracking though and yes it is compatible with the Dynadio system as I have it in mine.
I'm next going for the reverse camera and IPod integration.
I also had the fiscon Bluetooth unit installed with the MFD3 which again is superb, even gives you some more goodies on the MFD like battery voltage, speed, rpm etc

Sounds like a great system :approve:
Your Sport sounds like it has plenty of toys like mine. And the Sport is the best :D. I like the pic of yours ;)
Does your headunit have a tv tuner?
My sport has a full mfd display and was wondering if it was upgraded would my mobile work via the buttons on the steering wheel?

The TV tuner is an add on unit for the MFD3. As is the bluetooth to enable your phone to work. There are 2 available that I know of. One is the VW BT unit and the other is the Fiscon like I have. Went for that one as it is better suited to my iPhone than the VW unit.
Toys..... I love adding toys to it lol Reverse camera soon, R36 steering wheel, the list goes on. Having a custom made tail pipe fitted next week to get rid of the awful pointy down ones.
Have you got the R36 pedals??? Now thay do look good
Id hate to tot up what I've spent on it....do you like the grill?
