Fluctuating Revs on a 52 Lupo

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help?

Reading other posts, I too wish to avoid paying the extortionate price for dealer diagnostic tests!

I have a 52 Lupo 1.0L SE. Recently the idling revs have started to fluctuate, almost to the point of stalling. This is an intermittent problem, but usually comes on when the car has warmed slightly. Other than that there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the problem starting.

Very occasionally the temperature gauge stays at zero, even when the car has been running for a while. However, I must stress, this is a very occasional problem.

The car did have a service in early 2007, so all filters etc have been changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's now starting to do my head in!

hi and welcome to the forum, perhaps you could introduce yourself in the new members section? ;)

now, the dodgy idle speed/stalling and temp gauge fault could all be interlinked, the temp sender are an easy thing to fix on these cars and aren't a rare item to fail.

it could be that the temp sender is giving false readings, which is causing the engine to either under or over fuel.

if i were you, first of all, get a new temp sender installed (very easy to do), see if that helps....

if not, it could be your idle control valve which is responsible for the dodgy idle.

as i say though, get a new temp sender, as it sounds to me as though the one you have at the moment is definitely faulty and will need replacing anyway.

as for fault scanners, you can get them for around £35/60 depending on which one you go for, check out my sig link for more details on the ones that i supply ;):beerchug:

I'll take your advice and take a look at the temperature sender! I was contemplating getting a diagnostic reader, but I also saw that you can get software for your laptop. Is this also a worthy option?

the software you're referring to i think, is called Vagcom. the license for this is aroun £50 (depending on currency exchange rates) the beauty of having vagcom is that there is so much more on it than fault reading, it is capable of reading real time measuring blocks (data from almost every sensor), it allows you to code keys (as long as you know the pin ;)), alarm fobs, adapt all sorts of modules etc etc.... it is well worth the money ;)

Just thougth I'd update on the Temp Sender change.

Ordered a new one off ebay for £13...bargain...and fitted it no bother. After I topped up the coolant I took it for a spin. Seemed to be working until the car warmed up again.

****ing thing started the fluctuating revs again. However, once again it's really random, as once I'd been into a shop to grab a paper I started it back up again and it ran fine all the way home!

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the problem. Can anyone shed any light?!

Put some gas-cleaning additive into the fuel hoping that would sort the problem. It has certainly got a bit better, but it still occasionally starts ildling dodgily!

I might try cleaning the throttle body out manually, as someone has mentioned it on another post.
