Dear all,

Used to have a a4 saloon tdi bought new in 2002 (B6). Sold it last year after 8 years / 80,000 troublefree miles.

Currently thinking about a a4 cabrio (want the b7).

I do quite a lot of mileage, about 15,000mi a year so consumtion is important. I am therefore looking at a 2.0 tdi... it also has to be auto. Our first car is a 4x4 so do not need the quattro drive train.
Budget wise, I am looking at £15k, could stretch a bit if necessary

Is the 2.0 tdi is the best choice?
Any real life mpg of the 2.0 tdi multitronic?
How does it compare with the 3.0 tdi or 2.0 TFSI?
Would it be any saving buying the petrol over the diesel?

What about reliability of those models in auto form (2.0 tdi / 3.0 tdi and 2.0 )
TFSI)

Many thanks
RP

As it's a cab- it would have to be the petrol for me or maybe the 3.0TDI

The 2.0TFSI is a very spritely engine and also relaxed when cruising, this compared to the 2.0TDI in my Golf which delivers the power in big chunks and has a lot of torque feel about it.

I have been doing 25k + miles a year over the last 2 years in my petrol and you can see my avg consumption is 30mpg.

In this time I have had only one big problem being the turbo which was promptly repaired under warranty.

Regarding multitronic- you will see many horror stories on here, mainly from the B6. The 3.0TDI has the more worshipped tiptronic transmission.

With your budget there appears to be a good choice available though ;)

Arnold, thats interesting I have a 3.0 tdi manual and I get around 32 mpg on short trips ( very hilly round here) and 42-4 mpg on a run. Feel much better about that now!!!:beerchug:

TBH I'm slightly disapointed about the economy of the 2.0tdi, I wanted a 3.0tdi but the car is mainly driven by the wife during the week, I worry about her operating anything with more power than the hoover :biglaugh:. I don't know how much different the cabrio economy is compared to the saloon.

I drive/own a '52 A4 2.4 cabby manual.
Now I know you chaps are contemplating fuel consumption of the diesels , so my v6 petrol at 35 ish to the gallon doesn't help, but I can tell you that the cabby is a heck of a fat old lump when it comes to kerb weight.
Though I have no saloon or avant to compare with I would say that the weight saps the 170 bhp v6 more than the weight of an A6 that I used to own ( 2000 'w' 2.4 v6 se )
So bear in mind the cabby is a heavy girl and therefore fuel return may leave a bit to be desired

I have a Cab B7 2.0 Tdi S Line, manual. Owned it from new '57' plate, now done 93000 miles, no problems. I do 27 to 30K miles a year, car is smoothest Audi I have had ( Previously had 3 new A4 saloons, and one Avant), still runs like new, in fact better, I would say the engine has now run in and is quieter than when new.
I get on average 43 mpg.

Thanks. For people who have been discussing salon versus cabrio. I used to have a b6 1.9 tdi 130ps manual. That was averaging 47mpg (on the computer). Car was used for a mix of town and long business trip.

Would still nice to hear from 2.0 tdi multitronics owners... reliability and mpg wise... could go to a manual but after a year of auto, I do not really fancy it

All I can add is the multitronic box was a known budget breaker in terms of reliability and there are countless threads on that topic.I believe the issues were overcome post 2006 or thereabouts .
For your info the 2 wheel drive auto is the multitronic and the quattros have tip tronic auto which is far more desirable and reliable. If that is news to you ,take a look in the search facility and make an informed decision
Good luck

I knew this, thanks. Reason why I am thinking fwd and multironic is for economy.
I do not think this is 2.0 tdi quattro tip cabrio... but maybe i should look at a 3.0 tdi quatrro tip. What's the reliabilty record on that one?
