Anyone know how to split the gear knob from the leather gaiter before I go breaking things?

They are made as one item so you just have to unmake them.

Did see a scirocco knob in a Passat the other day. Looked smart but don't know how they achieved it.

I need to replace mine, the chrome is wearing off but the gaiter is fine.
Which year/model is it off?

Didn't replace the knob in the end, found out you can just replace the chrome trim and numbers :-)
