View Full Version : Question juddering at speed
:1zhelp:my 2005 passat 2.0 tdi 140 has started juddering at around 70-80 mph it doesnt do it all the time seems to happen when accelerating hard. also in the last month its hard selecting first and reverse gears and when raising my foot off the clutch it makes a sort of screeching/binding noise. and when cold i think you can hear the release bearing clunking about .ive read on this forum that this could be the DMF.its done 108 k miles.i was just wondering if the juddering would be related to this or could this be a different problem .
any help will be appreciated.
thanks in advance

Could be the dual mass flywheel ?
could a faulty injector cause the problem and would i get a fault code

No, If the injector had failed the engine would shut down without notice and leave you the message "Engine fault - Garage"
Have a read of my tales of woe with my injectors on this thread

i thought it could be the dual mass flywheel but there is no judder when setting off just at speed and it is only every now and then that it happens.do injecors pack in all at once or do they fail over a period of time and would i get message on dash display.
thanks

To check the judder you need a VCDS read. It is possible for an injector to play up rather than fail. If this is the case it should show up in a scan and the injector could fail at any time. The release bearing and DMF may be a problem but won't cause your judder. Gearbox off to check. No other way.

Is it possible it's just a wheel balance issue? My rear wheels shake like crazy over 60mph but only cause I haven't the proper spigot rings fitted at the min.
I've had badly balanced wheels in the past and it can be quite juddery.
It only seems to do it every now and again so I don't think it's a wheel balance issue. If it was a injector would I not get engine workshop message. So it looks like I've got two expensive problems to sort out

If the injector registers an error it does not always flag it as a fault, so no dash light. The error will be strored and can be read with VCDS or by a dealer.
Hi
Took it to my mates garage today no errors stored
If the juddering is an injector problem Would it definitely have
stored a error. Also having DMF and clutch replaced tomorrow.
Pricey lol

This is the sort of thing you might get with a potentially faulty injector:
004711 - PD Unit Injector: Cylinder 3 (N242): Regulation Range Exceeded
P1267 - 006 - Short to Plus - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00100001
Fault Priority: 0
Fault Frequency: 2
Reset counter: 30
Mileage: 100000 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2011.00.00
Time: 08:35:21
Freeze Frame:
RPM: 2012 /min
Torque: 88.0 Nm
Speed: 85.0 km/h
It doesn't mean it is going to fail, but it might.
All you can do is wait to see if the juddering gets worse.
Thanks Martin1810 for your help
I will do that and see if it gets worse
Can live with it at the moment it's only done it three times
In as many months.
hi all
just replaced clutch and dmf with luks one it sorted the hard to get 1st and reverse gear and the rattling noise when cold from the gearbox area but has martin1810 said earlier that wont make it judder.it seems to be getting worse now just wanted to know if anything else could cause this apart from a injector.i diconnectecd the air mass meter and took it for a drive, and there was no change in power just the same is this right.could it be the air mass meter its a bit less than an injector lol.
thanks key.

In the old days, before the complections of computers and DMFs, it used to be the engine mounts either loose or failing that would be the problem.. Just a thought

Disconnecting the MAF must have an affect. It should also set an engine fault code.
The only way to be sure of a faulty MAF is to check the emgine measuring blocks on a hot engine accelerating from 1000 rpm to 4000 rpm in 3rd gear. This will show if the MAF and EGR are ok. The cheapest judder type fault, is a faulty injector loom. This is quite rare on B6 engines but may happen.
Hi
Thanks for your replies. unplugging the maf
Makes no difference at all In fact I think it drives a bit better.
I'm going to take it to Vw to let them sort it
Cheers key
