Hi all,

Fairly sure i need to replace the brake pedal light switch, is this also referred to as the sensor?

Every now and then when i touch the brake pedal the esp light comes on and won't go off til i restart the engine.

Assuming its the switch (also hoping!)

Anyway my main query is when I look up the part on the motor factors website (in ireland) they have two listed for my car, 2 or 4 poles, with no explaination?

http://www.micksgarage.ie/autoparts.aspx?dept=377&MakeID=5&ModelID=4797&CarID=16046&AssemblyID=100509&b=57&ga=806

Anyone know which one I should need?

Many thanks

Philip

2 poles means it has 2 terminals and 4 means it has 4 terminals, you will need to have a look at yours to see how many you have

Most are 4 pin, to get to the switch you need to remove the lower dash panel, 2x 8mm screws at the bottom, pop the fuse cover off on the end of the dash and there is also a 8mm screw there. Dash panel should then wiggle off.

Changed myne the other day £6.78 genuine from audi.

Cheers for the instructions, yeh might try and get genuine audi as looks like the price may not be a million miles.

I read on some sites about them having some sort of twisty lock and make sure the piston is all the way out but in the pics can't see anything along those lines?

is there anything critical I need to look out for when installing?

Yea twists out and twists in, i just made sure it was pulled rite out which it was, then pushed it in and twisted it. All my lights are now off, i had esp abs and glow plug light on lol.

If you getting one from the dealers all you got to do is twist the old one out and twist the new one don't go messing with the long plunger on the switch it is set and dont move the brake pedal when fitting the new switch

Cheers, going to try and get one soon as the light is so annoying coming on. I'll replace it outside the dealers as you mentioned, suppose it'll be easier to get a new one if i screw it up there.

It is a very easy fix, did mine on my parents drive, loads of warnings for things but i just twist out and twist in and it was fine.

Hi Nutkin - I have to replace my brake light switch. A6 (C5) Avant 2002. I read somewhere about not touching pedal when replacing switch? Any advice? Cheers

Just changed the brake light switch - no change! Still get glow plug warning light and esp. I also get the 'blown bulb' warning but all lights seem OK. Brake lights OK, as before.

Any help or advice welcome!

Cheers

Hi,

Thanks all, just replaced mine without any trouble - £10.47 from Audi. I'd had no brake lights at all! All the dashbard lights are out too.

I'm no mechanic and was bracing myself for an extortionate bill before having a search on the forum - So glad I did.

Thanks again!

Hi
The fix for mine was a brake light bulb replacement, even though the brake lights worked. Problem happened again last week and I replaced the same bulb - this time the bulb looked bad (like it was filled with white smoke). I'm wondering why I've had two blown bulbs gone within weeks?
Any feedback welcome. Cheers.

Hi,

Now this may or may not be related but I had to change a brake light bulb a few days before the dashboard lit up and all 3 brake lights stopped working. Not sure if/why the switch on the pedal would have caused this and may just have been a simple coincidence.
Sorry I ca't be of any more help and good luck with it.

Regards,

Ben
