Right so I've seen a RCD300 which I wanted but da MP3 one, now I've seen da RCD310 so now I'm stuck on which 1 to buy..
Main aim is I want a MP3, good standard sound.. & which 1 would fit a B6 on a 06 plate.. At the moment I have a standard one which only plays original CD's
I'm looking to upgrade ALL my speakers any advice on which type to get or what to look out for ??

From my limited knowledge of audio on the B6 passat I suggest the following:
With the RCD300 you will probably not benefit too much from changing the speakers as the head unit isn't powerful enough to drive them. Your economical choice would be to get the MP3 RCD300 and leave the setup as is, but if you were to replace your speakers you'd have to get a new head unit to be able to make the most of them.
A while ago I changed my RCD300 for a Sony headunit and the sound transformation was amazing, even with stock speakers which aren't that bad actually. However poor radio reception (due to 3rd party units having DIN aerial adapters) and non-oem looks meant that it didn't last long - I now have the RCD300 back in place, even with inferior sound quality.
A note with the RCD310 - look on this forum at other threads and you'll be aware that there is a power drain issue with earlier Passats, which only a canbus upgrade will fix...
So if I were you with a decent amount of funds, I would leave speakers as is (they are pretty good for OEM), upgrade the canbus gateway, and put a 310/510 in simply for the perfect factory look on the dash...

I have the standard speakers and a Zenec headunit. 4x60w output is the one off the best on the Market. Sound quality is amazing and no need for the subs.
To make even more from your standard speakers, but some sound dampening in. I didn't spend nearly £100 a door on the proper dynamat stuff, I spend £30 on a 10m roll of lead flashing replacement used on roofs! Same stuff, 10% of the price and does a fantastic job.

Before you go ahead with fitting sound dampening, it might be worth, as said above, fitting a non-OEM stereo with a decent in built amp - I did this and in my Passat and my Golf Mk6, it's made a world of difference. The speakers aren't that bad, they're just not driven very well.

I would agree 100%. The likes of the rcd510 have an amazing difference in sound quality over the more basic 310 and so on. There really would be a need to change the speakers. My main reason for sound deadening the doors was to try and reduce tyre noise. It didn't reduce the noise that much, but it did improve the speakers even more.
