:1zhelp:Hi, I hope someone may be able to help me with getting the right replacement engine for the above - the engine code is AFN - I have scanned ebay and I'm in the process of doing the rounds with the scrappy's and waiting for a reply.
I'm wondering if the auto engine has a different crankshaft to the manual engine and therefore my donor would need to be auto or can I just slot a manual in to replace the existing pile of *** currently occupying the engine bay at the moment.
Does anyone have any info on what other engines may fit so I can at least appear like I know what I'm talking about when I'm asked technical questions
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.
Cheers
Ian

The tiptronic has a different crank to the manual for sure. I know this because I read about some nutter in the US who converted their tip car to a manual and had to grind the crank down to fit. Not sure about the multitronic though, to be certain I would get one the same as what you currently have.

The 98 AFN engine is identical on both auto and manual but it does needs the needle bearing in the end of the crank to support the input shaft if swapping onto manual(you're doing the other way round in your case). You need to swap everything from your lump and job's a good one. |What's wrong with the existing engine ?

Many thanks,
I will pass the info on to my mate who is going to help me with the swap. At the moment I'm still trying to find a suitable replacement at a reasonable price (consumate with the state of the rest of the car) I'm not sure if I'm going to do it or just put it on ebay as spares and repair as it is still running??? with tax & MOT till oct. I might get something for it.
The engine is making horrendous bottom end noises, plumes of black smoke and drinking oil like Charlotte Church drinks lambrini. Fuel comsumption is up and power is down.
My local mechanic has managed to squeeze thousands of miles out of cars that I have been convinced are knackered, so when he told me it was terminal I took that as a trustworthy diagnosis.
Fortunately I do have another car which is 20 years old and has 327K on the clock (same engine with all original internals) which is not an Audi so I won't mention it on here.
Once again thanks for the help.
Ian.
