Chances are the garage used an alternative power source, such as a battery memory saver that plugs into your cigarette lighter. Sealy make one, but you'll need a 12v power source. Not cheap either at £20+. http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-2-4592-128157-sealey-memory-master-memory-saver-%26-battery-tester-12v.asp
You could always add a couple of crocodile clips and leads from the new battery to the connecting leads on the existing battery. Before doing this, strip off the plastic fascia, securing battery clamp, etc. Should be straight-forward swap. Ensure the key is not in the ignition, etc.
If your existing battery is serviceable, you can top up the individual cells with distilled water (don't over-fill).
Your Audi main dealer will charge you £40 or so to read the radio code, if you lose the power supply. The code is printed on the inside of the radio instructions in the handbook if that's any help.

Car should have "Convienience Radio Coding" which means the car and radio are known to each other so a code is not required when the battery is disconnected.

Thanks because the guy who changed the alternator pulley did not put a power supply to the car when the battery was disconnected anyway seen a good deal at Costco for a Bosch silver battery for £79

Wow, I always wondered why my wifes A3 1.8T, after having the battery disconnected for about 4 hours, and then a new battery put in, never needed to have a code put into the radio, it just worked as normal.

An excellent deal, I paid £65.00 for an unbranded make with only a 2 year guarantee.
