Since about three weeks after buying my B7 2.0 TFSI, 2nd and 3rd gear starting crunching. I have tried changing the oil to the recomended grade ( i forget which grade now ) but it done very little to help.
I think its 2nd and 3rd gear and syncro but I dont have the tools, nor too confident, in repairing it myself.
I live in N Ireland and really only know of one fella that repairs them and he makes his own figures up and charges what he likes, a few times, not even sucessfully repairing the boxes first time.
Does anyone know of rough prices for repair, who is good for these repairs ( even any sponsers here ? )
Im thinking if its delivery to the mainland that it will be a pallet charge which I think may be £50 each way but ill have to be sure first

Hi, does it still do it when properly warmed up? Mine is quite crunchy when cold and it takes quite a long time for the gearbox to warm up I've found. What mileage you on?

Hi Mike and thanks for the response. It is not as bad when warmed up but you definitly know its there all the same. I have 113'000 on her. I have adapted to driving it now with crunchy gears as after taking off in first, i put my clutch in and slowly select second and same for third. It just comes natural now as if I drive her high in the revs at all in first and go for a fast second, she will crunch like a learner looking for reverse !!

Hi bangor lad the fact its not to bad when you change gear slow proves the fault is with the syncros. Its best to have a full rebuild but make sure your getting new syncro hub springs fitted at the same time as most rebuilders dont fit them. its the hub spring loaders that pushes the syncro against the tapper on the gear to make it grip hence weak springs then lack of syncro grip. I good quailty rebuild should cost about £625.00 plus fitting plus vat....Its a shame as I,m thinking of moving to wexford in about 12 weeks time and could have helped you out......anyway hope this info helps

Great geartec and thanks for the advice. Im stuck between a rock and a hard place as it might be better and cheaper to buy a second hand box or even a recon. The only thing with the second hand box is that it might well give the same bother 1 to 1000 miles later.
I am in no rush to get the repair done.
