hi
im new on the forum, and i am a bit confused by what as happened to my 1996 p 1.9 diesel polo since fitting a new starter motor.
After the car as started there is a constant whine coming from the starter motor and a hot electrical smell.
Have i wired it up wrong ?
Or does any body know of any other possibilities

me hoping
cheers in advance :beerchug:

I'm not familar with a '96 Polo 1.9 Diesel but my wifes car is a 2003 1.9TDI Polo which has a similar layout. Is this wining noise continuous or does it happen only immediately after startup for a short time ?
It would be difficult to wrongly wire a starter motor as the leads normally fit only in the correct position.
It could be that the solenoid arm gets stuck causing the starter pinion not to return. If this happens then the engine flywheel gear teeth will drive the starter instead of the other way round . This will give a "shrieking noise" and if continued for any significant length of time will damage the starter bearings . It may be you have a faulty starter. Was this a factor exchange starter ? Or it could be that the starter is not aligned properly to the flywheel teeth. It may be worthwhile if you slacken the starter mounting bolts by about 1 -2 turns and try to move the starter further away from the flywheel and then hold in that position whilst re-tightening. If this doesn't work then I would return the starter for refund/ replacement.
Without hearing the noise it's difficult to diagnose.
