Hi folks. I was not too sure where to post this so I have put it here and in the wanted section.
I am going to buy a multi function steering wheel off Ebay with the red SLine badge on the bottom. Brand new for £150.
First of all, I was going to ask if anyone on the forum is selling one or knows of any of the flat bottom steering wheels that they could offer me instead ?
Second thing is that I just have the normal wheel on mine, I take it that I might just have to buy an extra loom for the steering wheel to work off the new buttons and possibly a recode with VCDS ?
Any help will, as always, be very much appreciated :)

Ok, I bought this one in the end from Ebay after trying a few sponsers from the site but they didnt have them. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140498184318&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
Sorry, ignore that link as the seller changed the item number. It is a brand new Audi A4 wheel the exact same as that link but without the paddles as my car is a manual.

WOW A8, thats an amazing walk through and very informative indeed.
So ill first need to check my air bag slip ring to see if it has all 20 pins occupied on the loom side. If not, ill need a new loom and slip ring.
Secondaly purchase the steering control module that you mentioned.
Then ill need to recode them all.
Is this correct ?
When you mention the part numbers for the control unit and the loom, you say either Q or R for control unit or A or B for slip ring. Why and how do I know which I need ?
I never get a chance to thank you by the THANK button A8, as im normally just on iphone, but im on the laptop now so I have today:beerchug:
Does this sound a fair price for the slip ring considering its damaged ? Are they expensive new A8 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-A4-AIRBAG-SLIP-RING-STEERING-SENSOR-4E0-953-541-/180570623855?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a0ad90f6f

post a scan for address 16 to identify your steering control unit
if it ends with Q or R then that's ok
the loom for the muti function will defiantly require replacing
then its just a case of identifying if you have the correct slip ring
coding is very easy
you adjust the code in address 16 to enable the mfsw controls
if you have radio you adjust the code to add
if you have telephone same again
i will walk you through it
Thanks for the thanks on the dis and cruise thread, its the first ever thanks and it been used by 1000's of people including ebay sellers
The thread has never made sticky status although it covers B6 & B7 DIS AND CRUISE PLUS MFSW
Glad to see someone shows a little appreciation lol

whip the airbag off and disconnect the yellow connector off and count the pins on the slip ring

Ok, done that and I think this is where my luck runs out :(
It has 12 pins of which only the top row of 6 are occupied.

Also found this which the seller claims came off a top of the range Scirocco flat bottomed wheel. No part number so I have messaged him to see.

Ok, i have emailed lots of folk to see if anyone has them and I am going to try TPS tomorrow to see how much they are and maybe just even get them if they are not too dear. Was too busy today doing clutches and flywheels on TDCI Mondeos ( yuk !!! ) to give them a call. No one have any lying in their bottom drawer of their roll cab ? lol

UPDATE - Phoned TPS - Slip Ring is a pricey bugger at £160 + Vodka And Tonic and the wiring loom is only £13.
I managed to track a slip ring off ebay for £62 delivered and I ordered the wiring from TPS.
Should be all ready to install by mid - next weekend

Bangorlad,

Its easy done Ben. No matter what screen you have on the iphone, you just hold the front button and press the power button once and it takes a snap shot and stores it in your pictures. Dead handy for pictures that dont allow the function of saving them.
I use my phone for the forum all the time as its so handy to just pick it up and press one button rather than power up laptops, goto favorites and log in.
Only bad thing about using the phone is that it does not have the THANK button option to show my appreciation to you guys for helping me out.
Phil - its all turning out a little more than I thought at the start but thats another bad thing about using the phone. Ebay is too handy to use. Had the idea of a new steering wheel and before you know it, im over £200 deep :)
Its all good fun though and what else would we spend our money and time on ? I suppose there is the wife but… ;)

Good work there Bangor Lad, looks smart, is that a 2nd hand wheel or new? Did you already have cruise and DIS?
I hope you don't mind me being rude and asking how much everythign cost - really missing my MFSW but still debating the need to cost ratio!!
Well done, you must be chuffed!!

Thanks Mike, yes, its all second hand. I already had cruise and if the DIS is the display in the dash, yes, I had that too
Steering Wheel £100
Airbag SlipRing & Wire £68
I have another steering wheel that is brand new but did not fit my airbag. It looks really well.

Hi Bangor,
I had planned to get the S-Line badged wheel from a 2008 A3.
Why did your existing airbag not fit? Was it physical size or cabling? Do you think it was a difference between A3 and A4 designs?
I've also got another multi-function wheel from a 2007 A4. I was led to believe that the airbags are all the same for the B7 models, and am now worried that it won't fit?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers, Lee

Thats the wheel that I had ( A3 one ) and my airbag would not fit into it as the steering wheel hole was too shallow. On investigating after, I found that this was the case with A3

Hi Bangor,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I have my eye on this one :-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280644158425&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
It looks deeper in the pics than the one you had. I've asked the seller to advise how deep the area for the air bag is. I have another MFSW wheel ready to go, but when I saw you could get an S Line badged one, I would prefer this one fitted.
How much did the airbag stick out when you tried it?
Cheers, Lee

17-03-2011, 09:03 PM
Your just right, if I could, I would have went for the one with the S Line badge. I think you will be fine with that one on the link. The one that I got had 2 holes on the bottom of the base where the airbag sits, where as your one on the link and the one that I got in the end to fit ( from a 2010 A5 ) only had one hole.
The airbag stuck out about 2 or 3 cm
A4 Lad
17-03-2011, 09:08 PM
Sorry Lee, Im using the iphone and have only noticed that the wheel that you are going for DOES have 2 holes, one is hiden under the metal disc, I honestly think that even if your airbag does fit, this extra hole will stop your slipring engaging properly and will snap it the first time that the wheel is turned. The only alternative that I could think of would be to block the second hole with JB weld or something along the line of a blanking plate although thats all getting a bit messy. Personally I would leave her Lee but I might be wrong

Hello everyone. I must say this is excellent thread and helped me a lot with putting B8 MFSW in my B7 2.5TDI multitronic.
I was just random surfing on ebay and notice this steering wheel: http://www.ebay.de/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350529327519#ht_11623wt_1396
Would it fit maybe into B7? I noticed that the connector looks pretty similar, but I'm not sure as well as if all of those buttons are supported?
I now have "regular S-line MFSW" from B8 (looks nicer with alu around MF :)), and have multitronic transmission, can I upgrade to steering wheel with shift knobs, would it fit multitronic?
This may be offtopic, but I'd just like to know if I replace my old RNS-E display with newer version display, which has greater resolution, would it work or would be the same resolution? Does it depends on graphic output on unit maybe?
Thank you and kind regards to all!

this is one of the best threads i have ever read on the different forums and hopefully will be using it when I change my 4 spoke standard wheel to a 3 spoke mfsw on my a4 avant b7 model the only thing I am really worried about is the air bag going off any good ideas how to this safely.
one other thing I notice on the bay you dont get the cover for the front of the steering wheel can these be bought seperately ?

A4 thanks for the quick response I hoped yourself or A8 would respond, what I mean by the front cover would be the unit you press for the horn sorry I didnt give a better description.
I am not to far from yourself about a hour on the M1 might be asking a few more questions of you in the near future if thats ok with you still a bit worried about the airbag do as one went off on a friend of mine and wasnt that nice,by the way did you connect your phone through the audi system I am asking as I removed a parrot ck3100 from my previous jeep and was wondering can they be made to work with the steering wheel.
Sorry for all the questions but I cant wait to get a MFSW fitted, thanks again

No worries at all Pablo, ask away. The steering wheel only comes in 2 main parts. The wheel itself and the airbag which slots into it ( see pictures )
As far as the phone. I turned my bluetooth on and searched while in the car. It ended up that my standard Audi Concert stereo has bluetooth built in which only needed paired with the phone to get it to work.

16368a4 just flicking through the bay and came across this what do you think I read on your thread that you had trouble getting the air bag to fit on one of your wheels and you said you need to purchase the wheel with only one hole in it on the left bottom is the steering wheel in the picture the type you talk about ? also while flicking through the bay I was lookig for a slip ring with the part number you a nd a8 quoted (4fo971589a or b and cant really find that one but plenty others
I am looking for these as i persume I will need to change the parts as I only have the standard 4 spoke wheel, can you give me a list of all the parts you had to change to get your wheel working, cheers a4

Airbag slip ring 4E0953541A or B will do the job
It has to be one of these two.
Yes, that wheel will fit the above slip rings :)

Would you say there is much to go wrong with the slip ring? I am thinking of buying one from a breakers, my concern is that it's an integral part of the air bag and don't want any faults with any safety aspects? How much is a new one from Audi?

Hi,
Another question regarding the slip ring part number-is there always a letter at the end? I have found what I think is the right one, the number match perfectly but the seller says there is no letter at the end?
Thanks,
Mike

The 'slip ring' has got a couple of kind of clock springs inside of it to carry the connection to the airbag. It is stressed that the slip ring is removed with the wheels in the straight-ahead position - and locked in position when off the car. If you can't guarantee this from your breaker then walk away. If in the wrong position and fitted to you car, the internals may break or short.
Hi,
Have had some fun trying to do the MFSW upgrade this weekend.
Almost got it done, but could use a little advice.
The last post has worried me a little. I got a slip ring from a breaker (came as a lump with the cruise, indicator and washer stalk). I have no idea whether it was taken off straight or not. Should I be worried? Fitted it today and it seems to work ok. Is there anything I need to check?
The question I was going to ask - I bought a used steering wheel. Looks in good condition and from the front looks exactly right. It came from a 2007/08 A4 (mine's 2005.5 A4 B7). I fitted the wheel this morning, but it scrapes against the steering assembly (not the cowling). Moves ok, but I wasn't happy with that - the original one doesn't at all. No part no. on the inside of wheel, but it has a yellow sticker that says 01 S on it.
Are there similar wheels that look identical? The only difference I could find was that on the back of the original wheel, the aluminium fitting is circular, whereas on the MFSW, it has a notch on each side - although I can't see that should make any difference.
Will an A3/A5/A6 wheel fit? Does anyone know the part no. I should be looking for?
Thanks in advance for any help!

As far as part numbers, I would have to look on my laptop as they are in there somewhere but at the time, I had about 4 different types of wheel and as long as they had the correct back ( as above ) they were fine. There must be something touching if its rubbing. Maybe a file or removal of something is required. I dont think an A3 will fit as that is where I had went wrong but the one that I have on mine now is off an A5 so it fits :)
Thanks A4 Lad. Let me know if you can find any part nos.
Audi have given me part no. 8K0 419091 BGUN for a black MFSW to fit (my) B7.
I also spoke with the master tech about the slip ring. He's said that they are quite fragile - and that they have no way of establishing what the centre position is.
So unless you've removed it yourself from a vehicle with wheels straight, second hand ones aren't a great idea.
At £200 new, not that keen to buy a new one. Sounds as if most likely failure would result in a warning light, MF not working or horn not working. Obviously my main concern was that it might short out and deploy the airbag, but it sounds as if that's unlikely. Anyone know where to get one cheaper than from main dealer?
Is there any adjustment possible on the slip ring/control stalk position on the steering column? If I could adjust it down even by a mm, I don't think it would scrape.
Have tried filing, but it hasn't helped - and there's no obvious place to file it down anyway.

Above is 'notched' end of MFSW. The original is just circular - otherwise can't see any difference at all.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
OK, done a bit more fiddling. There's a small allen bolt accessible through a hole on the lower cowling (need to lower rake/height adjust lever to get to it). By loosening that, it's possible to move the steering switch assembly. I pushed it away from the steering wheel as far as it goes and retightened. Now it only scrapes slightly for part of the turn to the left - and not at all when turning right. I can almost live with that. Starting to think the steering wheel is correct part, but very slightly mishaped. But not sure it's worth spending money on another. I'd be grateful for any thoughts.
Regarding centre position for slip ring... Have read that you can centre slip ring by removing it and very carefully turning it all the way in one direction until it's fully wound, then back the other way, counting the number of turns - and finally turning it back half the total number of turns. Seems to make sense. Has anyone tried that?
I have turned the wheel all the way left and right and it's not broken yet!
An update.
Bought another steering wheel (had been on an A3). It has the same back as the original and doesn't scrape at all. So it seems that there are (very slight) variants. After speaking to a trusted mechanic, checked slip ring while wheel was off. It is possible to check it's central by gently turning it fully to the left, then right and counting half way back. Turned out mine was already central. I also discovered that you can see the position of the clock springs thought the plastic, so was able to compare with my original slip ring for reassurance.

Guys
A few more questions/options I am thinking of as I have always liked the mfsw
1.
I have a 4 spoke wheel at the moment and I was thinking of purchasing a 4 spoke mfsw wheel of the bay now I am just wondering if I do this can I use my existing slip ring and air bag and air bag cover and just have to buy the mfsw loom from a dealer and borrow my friends vcds unit.
2. there is a complete 3 spoke mfsw wheel and stalk and controls unit on the bay I am just better to buy this and fit it.
3. I have always preferred the 3 spoke mfsw units the only thing about this set up is I persume I can use the air bag but i will have to purchase a slip ring and reading some posts on here if it has not been centered you have to be carefull in setting it back up again true/false, and I have been looking on the bay for quiet a while now and I can only find air bag covers to suit the 4 spoke wheels.
any thoughts on this guys ?

Hey All, seems like I have a problem performing this mod on my B7 A4.
I have an s-line wheel (with DSG Paddles) from a S4 B7 (8K0419091AKURS) and I can't figure out where the two 3-pin connectors from the spokes go (guessing this is for the paddles). I have a 16-pin S/C and control module ends in "R"
24532
(note the two 3-pin connectors on either side of the wheel)
I have no idea where these go :(

Hi can anybody tell me if the flat bottom mfsw wheel from a 2015 a3 s line will fit my b7? I doubt all the functions will work as there’s more buttons but as long as the ones same on the earlier wheel work I’m ok with that.

Hi A8
Im a newby on here but have been looking for advice on retrofit Mfsw for Passat b5.5 2004
I have the Mfsw and the Mfsw relay 452
i have vcds. My car has the cruise control on the indicator stalks.
I bought a loom from Germany but don’t know if I need to retire anything or just activate the Mfsw via vcds?
Any help would be greatfully appreciated. 👍🏻
