Hi all

I've recently become a proud owner of a Passat estate.

I have a question - though I know it is more of a preference than a statistic - which is better (or more popular/preferred/attractive); the estate or the saloon.

The reason why I'm asking is because I was in search for a saloon; I never did like estates no matter what make or model they may be. It so happened that I ended up liking this particular estate, and so I went for it.

Now that I have it, I feel I might be liking the saloon more.

What do you guys think; the estate or the saloon?

(maybe we could have a poll on this)

Thank you

All depends what you like/want/need/prefer etc. I'm lucky as I have a Passat saloon and my wife has a Passat estate, so the best of both worlds. Ultimately the estate comes in handy when needing to pack or move lots of stuff or bulky items.

It really is a matter of personal preference.
(My) Pros: Estate has better looking lines; is more versatile (can carry a HUGE amount of stuff); there are less of 'em than the saloon; has 2 bag hangers as standard.
Cons: Possibly a little more road noise; marginally worse MPG (heavier); boot is less secure as the folding seat backs cannot be locked.

It's purely a lifestyle choice, and for me the convenience/versatility of an estate wins. Personally I prefer the looks of an estate over a saloon although I don't think the Passat is the best looking estate on the market.

I nearly bought an estate, but the condition of my saloon jumped out at me and my heart was taken.

Handy as an estate would be, I have decided that I want a Passat CC next - either that or I am going to go for an older car and get a Phaeton.

I prefer the looks of the estate for some reason. I'm like that with a couple of cars (the Renault Laguna and Peugeot 407 being two that spring to mind).

Having owned both a B6 estate and B6 saloon, I much preferred my estate. It was very handy having roof bars for the bikes, the vast amount of boot space and the looks. I loved the look of my estate and am having a hard time getting my saloon to look just as nice!

I currently drive a saloon and didn't really consider the estate when buying, at the moment I don't have a use for an estate however if I did I'd have had no problems looking at one.

Some people however do prefer estates without having a requirement for one, my best mate drives an B6 A4 Estate as he preferred the style over the Saloon and it is a good looking car.

I'd say horses for courses. I'm pleased with my estate, my friend in work has the same car as me but in saloon version, had a go of his aswell, and they both drive pretty much the same.

My estate is slightly worse on mpg, (i'm talking 1-3 mpg) and seems to be a bit more "wallowy" in the bends, but what can you expect driving round with a greenhouse on the back lol

I had a B6 170 SEL saloon for 3 years and have recently switched over to a Highline+ 170 estate. I favour the estate, most definitely.
My biggest bugbear about the saloon was merely not the size of the boot, but getting things in it. Whilst that doesn't seem to make sense...I am referring to the boot opening itself. Addtionally when you put stuff in there, it is so hard to reach stuff behind the seat, and you end up almost having to climb into the boot to retrieve it !
I was worried about not having sports suspension and the sports seats for the new B6....I needn't have worried, the seats are very comfortable and the estate handles just as well. Had bigger 18" wheels with the lowered suspension, and it looks awesome too :approve:.

Always been a fan of saloons, which is what I have got now, but can definitely see the benefits of an estate which will probably be the next type of car I get.

However I preferred the look of the saloon over the estate. Estates I like the look of include the V70 (yes.. I know...), the E class and the 5 series touring...

I've always favoured the saloon over the estate.

I've always disliked the shape of the estate, kind of reminds me of a van. There is no doubt in its practical superiority over the saloon, but nevertheless, the image I see is of the front end of a 'car', and then the roof goes on and on and on... until someone splits it somewhere in order to stop it being mistaken for a train.

(I'm sure gonna get nudged for this)

Anyhow, this is my first estate, and it is absolutely fantastic. I'm trying my utmost to get used to it and to portray its positive bits...

B6, Sport, 4Motion, Diesel, Park Sensors both ends, Leathers - fronts heated, MFD2 (Sat Nav) [going soon], Cruise Control, Black.

I will try to make the most of all of the above and hope I beginning 'liking' the shape.

For me, coming from a B5.5 saloon, I found the B6 saloon ungainly with a heavy r-send and a disproportionately large overhang.
Also, rear visibility particularly to the rear three-quarters was woeful. The estate at least has decent visibility, and the overhang looks more natural as it has a function, providing a huge load area.
Unfortunately, one trade off is poor noise insulation from the rear.

personal preferance as others have said.

However one thing to add, estate will retain its value much better. There are less of them around and as they get older they are sought after by tradesmen etc.

I have had several passats, prefer the saloon for all the reasons above, but with the one estate I had it was a real eye opener, how easy it was to sell and how little I lost on it in a year!

Well if you're counting heads, I prefer the look of the estate, but don't need one. Cost and possible noise were also factors.
