I'm about (tomorrow) to become a proud owner of a 2005 1.9 diesel A4 saloon (40K on clock, full leather and phone prep etc,8.5 K paid hoping I got a good deal) - wondering if anyone can recommend the best(and cheapest) roof bars

Great helpful site by the way

Thanks:beerchug:

I expect that you can still buy Thule bars with suitable feet in *********.
Much cheaper than the oem ones but I think made by the same manufacturer. I have these and they are fine. Certainly good for the ski box when needed. You may find some of these or oem ones on fleabay.;)

I've used this site too, very good, competative prices and quick delivery. I have Thule Bars, Atera bike carriers and Atera ski box. All good, definitely worth a look.

Congrats on the new car!

I've used both Paddy Hopkirk (now sold as Halfords Value) as well as Thule. The thule are a different class, rapid fit are easy to fit and have better securing points - using the manufacturers fitting points and lug in the doorframe.

I think what you need for your car is as follows (prices from Halfords in brackets) :
Thule 761 (standard black square section bars) (£28.99)
You can also get aero bars in aluminium but more expensice part 861
Thule fitting kit 1212 (£29.99)
Footpack 754/750 (£59.99)
All in £118.97!

Just so happens I have a complete set up from my last car sitting in the garage doing nothing if you are interested.

Why not go for a nice chrome bootlid rack with some lovely wicker baskets? :D
