55 plate - 1.9TDI SE - 117K miles

Hello All,

I've been getting this humming noise coming from underneath behind the car for the last couple of weeks (I've checked it out and its definitely coming from underneath the boot), I thought it may have been related to another issue I had with my downpipe, (see thread http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=109692 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=109692) )
However now that I've got my downpipe sorted the humming noise still exists. Having read some of the threads it seems the symptoms are the same as when the Fuel pump is about to go.
What are your thoughts on this because I'm under the impression all the cars that had this fuel pump problem that it was detected at an early stage within couple of thousand miles where as mine has done over 117K. Maybe it's part of the wear and tear process.

Thanks,
Rehman

at 117k it is wear & tear. Just get it replaced before it fails and leaves you stranded:D

Thanks Martin, I've been quoted £140 for the pump from another breakers. Do you know if it's a big job and also would a local mechanic be able to do it or would need to go to VW?

Be sure it's not just the tail pipe resonating, generally they get quieter with age as they coke up, but if the baffels are going or the skin is perishing this could be your hum, iirc if the pump is about ready to die, you will be getting running issues as well, best check the boot for loose items also, these can make funny noises as they make love to hard surfaces.

Anyone can do it. £140 seems a bit steep for a secondhand pump, that's about £240 new.

True, I'm not getting any running issues so I'll get it checked out first before ordering any parts. I'll update once sorted.

The fuel pump is underneath the rear passenger offside seat. If you lift the rear seat out, lift the material cover up you'll see the top of it and should be able to hear it if that's the fault when the engine's running.

I've been to the Mechanic who really couldn't hear anything until we took it to a quiet spot and he sat in the drivers’ seat. He put the noise down to the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) :aargh4: going at an early stage. This probably explains why the recent slight vibration in the steering wheel. I've also checked by releasing the clutch slowly in 1st gear and noticed it wants to fly (not bad for 105bhp) rather then move off normally.
I was a bit confused thinking the noise was coming from the fuel pump but he said that it’s the vibration travelling to the back. (I think I will listen to the noise again by lifting the back seat as suggested above in case the Fuel Pump is the second issue).

I really can't afford getting the car sorted now so should be ok for another 6 months you think? There is no problem putting the car into gears yet and also the engine isn't really noisy.

after the car had been running for about 40 mins I noticed the humming, i lifted the back seat and OMG I felt loads of vibration with my hand on the off side(drivers side) other side wasn't bad. you can also feel it just sitting in the back seats. So it's probably best I change the fuel pump first.

Guys, I need your advice. :1zhelp:

I've ordered a Fuel pump for the car through the PartsGateway website.
They have all the car details using my Vehicle registration number. However I had a phone call back asking to confirm which Fuel Pump I need as apparently there are two for this car. One is internal in the tank (which they've got) and the other is located externally.
So which one do I need to order? ...Bear in mind I can hear the humming noise coming from behind the driver’s seat.

Your input is very much appreciated and I need to let them know on Monday morning before they dispatch.

PS – In case you want to know, the second hand fuel pump ordered is for £80 inc vat + Delivery.

Wait for more replies, but I think they need to know if it's a tank pump or the tandem pump which is on the engine iirc.

You want the one that goes in the tank. Part number 3C0 919 050 G or similar.
The design changed so don't be surprised if the one you get doesn't match yours. You may have to swap a couple of bits.

Cheers Martin, Thats the one they have available (the one in the tank). I'll let them know tomorrow morning. Thanks again :-)

Had the pump replaced this morning and the humming noise no longer exists :-)
I've also noticed it's a lot smoother when picking up speed in all gears.

Thank you all for your direction and advice.
