White spirt, a tooth brush and an hour or so.
If you've got the time soaking would be better.
ALTHOUGH, there are rubber parts in the plastic shut off actuator and the metal pan thing on top that probably wouldn't like being soaked.
If you can soak it without soaking these bits it's not too bad.
I went the whole hog and otook the inlet manifold off an cleaned that out too.

Have you got a new rubber gasket? If not, don't do it, as I cleaned mine and put it back together without replacing the (overpriced) rubber and I had oily stuff leak from it and go all over the place! It goes between the 2 bits of metal by the butterfly valve, the bit that's held together by 3 allen keys - if you understand what I mean.
I also used a toothbrush, and some brake cleaner. And lots of rags.

I made it myself. Uploaded the ECU maps, used winOLS to find the maps.
After changing the maps, uploading them to a open source web site for someone to look over to check if safe.
After a few revisions, downloading to the ECU, doing various runs logging data with vagcom, a few more revisions later, bingo.
No idea what power but guessing about 160 at least.
Been running about a year now on it, passed the MOT smoke test no problem.:drive:
