My A4 1.9 TDi Quattro Sport Avant needs a pair of rear dampers. One is leaking oil. Where's the most cost effective place to get some from. ie I'd rather not pay dealer prices but I don't want chinese ones either! I did discover a TPS 5mins from my office the other day, is it worth trying them for a price. I heard they were trade only but possibly will supply owners who know what they're after,

Dealer, GSF or Euro car parts.

TPS will usualy supply to the public, but unless you are part of the trade, they'll give you the same price as a main dealer.

Try genuine from TPS (yes they will supply you) and look for a local stockist of Sachs or Boge bur be careful not to get fobbed off with a “one fits all” option. There are four possibilities of rear damper for you car depending on your suspension PR code which could be 1BA, 1BD or 1BE or 1BV but I think it will be 1BE. This would make the dampers 8E0 513 036 AF and I only get those being listed by Monroe (E1284) or Optimal (A-1229G) which is unusual, maybe Monroe was the OE supplier. Sachs list the damper as 280 489 but say it is no longer available and the Boge number is 27-E01-A but this is also listed as being no longer available.

thanks guys, I'll check my ID sticker in the boot for the correct PR. I found these, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rear-shock-absorber-Audi-A4-2001-05-8E0513033G-/120583729238?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c1359b056 cheap enough for genuine ones I think, if they're right!

That's around the same price that i get Monroes for, at local factors. Never
had any regrets.

You might need bump-stops as-well. Sport bumps are a little shorter, but standard ones can be trimmed.

turns out he only has one! And i can't find the chassis ID sticker in the sparewheel well, certainly not obvious like it was in the A6 or the Golf anyway. Any ideas guys?
