:1zhelp: I have a 1991 2.2l 20v (thats the 5cyl one) coupe and need to replace the auto gear box as there is no kickdown and the sport mode is inop.
Without taking the gear box off the car how do i find out which model it is? Also is there a newer model that can be used as a replacement?
Any and all help is very much appreciated

Hi,
I know the coupe will be a 2.3 engine (code 7A). Don't know what gearbox it uses. but the transmission code will be stated on the vehicle data sticker.
There is a data sticker inside the front cover of the service schedule, if you do not have this, there is another in the boot on the inside of the rear valance to the right side, remove the square(ish) storage bin to see it!. You may find that the gearbox is common with other models, this is the case with the manual 20v's

how do i check if there are other models that have the same gearbox? is there a site that allows me to search by code numbers?

If you register at Vagcat, you can view their online parts fiche,
Register and login, look at:
http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/au/ACO/1992/142/51/1469227/
which should be your coupe, maybe compare with the 80, 90 and 100 of similar years when you know what transmission code you have?
The V6 engines share the same bellhousing bolt pattern I think, so you may find something more modern too?
Don't take Vagcat as gospel, it does have some faults so I'm told, but it is great for a free resource
